I'll move it up to a C for effort. Pitty for you and compassion seem to have gotten the better of me.

That's because Bidenomics is empirically defined as inflation, and we don't want that.Gary Childress wrote: ↑Mon Sep 11, 2023 3:41 pmProducing something that others actually want. We don't.

If anything, this demonstrates that you could question what you think is known.Gary Childress wrote: ↑Mon Sep 11, 2023 4:52 pmIf the world were actually a place that was hospitable to humans or else cared an iota about us, then philosophy might amount to something. I have yet to see evidence of any of that.Lacewing wrote: ↑Mon Sep 11, 2023 4:35 pmIt depends on what you use it for.Gary Childress wrote: ↑Mon Sep 11, 2023 2:03 am Studying philosophy is the most worthless waste of time anyone can commit oneself to. Prove me wrong!
If you use it to prove you're right... and/or to settle on fixed answers... it's working for the ego.
If you use it to question what is 'known'... as an open-ended exploration... there will always be more to discover.
Discovery is a great use of time and energy!![]()

OK. OK. I'll appoint you as head of the class. Take my seat. I quit. Enjoy tenure, the soda machine in the lounge is free for those who have it.Walker wrote: ↑Mon Sep 11, 2023 6:34 pmThat's because Bidenomics is empirically defined as inflation, and we don't want that.Gary Childress wrote: ↑Mon Sep 11, 2023 3:41 pmProducing something that others actually want. What is to make us think that "reality" around us really cares about human "wisdom"? I don't see much evidence for it. What's the worst that can happen to a person without wisdom that won't happen to someone with it, death?commonsense wrote: ↑Mon Sep 11, 2023 6:32 pmWhy do you say this? The facts agree.Gary Childress wrote: ↑Mon Sep 11, 2023 6:29 pm... go hire someone who agrees with you. That's usually the best way to be right.
Auto companies are losing money hand over fist despite subsidies.
Like the eagles, aquatic mammals are being sacrificed on the alter of wind off the Jersey and Delmar penisula coasts.
The only need for wind turbines and electric cars is causes by the propaganda implanted into noggins, as you can attest.

I was going to respond by asking what all that has to do with the price of fish in China, but thinking more about it, I think I can almost see a tangental connection. Yes. You may now lead the class. I retire. Good luck. I'll write you from Hell. I hear the sex is pretty good there. Choir was never my thing anyway.Walker wrote: ↑Mon Sep 11, 2023 6:45 pmThe facts agree.Gary Childress wrote: ↑Mon Sep 11, 2023 6:29 pm... go hire someone who agrees with you. Gary, if you are not as thick as you sound, you're putting on a good imitation.
We proved you wrong, as you requested. Get over it.

Ah, the blockhead has learned how to use the word "thick" against others. He'll be perfect for the part. Bye, bye, blockhead. Enjoy tenure in the rocket science department. I'm sure your students will thank you someday. Maybe you could teach them how to lack wit?

OK, so if philosophy were interesting to people who are not philosophers or people who come to forums and discuss philosophy it might then not be worthless. Well, there are physicists, psychologists, novelists, poets, sociologist, rebels, reformers, politicians, educators, art and film critics and makers and more who have been and are interested in philosophy. I think a lot of people appreciated getting some thrown in as part of liberal arts education.
Nothing more worthless....hm. Pop up ads. Most artificially enlarged lips. But then that's just my taste...or distaste.
I dunno, I think the interests in stock car racing´or comic coms or meditating away one's self are silly.
Some popular interests make me walk to retch or just shake my head in astonishment.
But why should they care what I think about their interest.
And vice versa.

Reality doesn't care about human wisdom, humans do (apparently)Gary Childress wrote: ↑Mon Sep 11, 2023 6:37 pm What is to make us think that "reality" around us really cares about human "wisdom"? Death is both 'in life' and 'in no life'. There is nothing to do in life at all except to spend the entire duration distracting ourselves, otherwise it's like a kind of living death.
And that's why we become philosophers, it's one way to distract ourselves from the infinite void that we are.
Philosophical thinking is like a work of art, and we are the ultimate artist, it's just another form of human self-expression...the alternative is cat life, who spend much of their lives sleeping a very lot.
Disclaimer: what I say is just my personal opinion.
