Love?
Love?
The English Bible appears to suffer from one signal fault. It employs English words that do not always correlate adequately with the words and langauages employed two thousand years ago. In partcular Love, as what has become a very loose and random term today, whereas Jesus employed the term, or approximation of the term, Agape. It is exceedingly unfortuante that this word was not Anglicised for use in the Bible and otherwise. Or, the very recent English term, Altruism, employed in lieu of Love.

Well the so-called 'english bible', itstelf, did NOT 'employ' 'those words'. 'you', human beings, ADDED 'those words' INTO what 'you' later called 'the english bible'.RWStanding wrote: ↑Sat Sep 02, 2023 9:24 am Love?

Yes, it is somewhat unfortunate that the word 'agape' did NOT remain around hitherto when this was being written.RWStanding wrote: ↑Sat Sep 02, 2023 9:24 am In partcular Love, as what has become a very loose and random term today, whereas Jesus employed the term, or approximation of the term, Agape. BUT, the SURPRISE that eventually ENSUED WHEN HOW MUCH of what WAS being WRITTEN, and SAID, ACTUALLY ALIGNS WITH and FITS IN PERFECTLY WITH what IS ACTUALLY IRREFUTABLY True, leaves an 'agape' in the 'mouth' of those who ARE Truly SURPRISED, and makes an 'agape' in the ACTUAL OPENNESS, WITHIN 'people, which IS ACTUALLY NEEDED for the TRUE LOVE to BEGIN, and FLOURISH.
Re: Love?
Yes, there are many different ways to perceive and experience love. Love does not simply refer to a physical attraction or relationship of some sort. It is possible to feel love for complete strangers, or for this planet, or for life, or for our own selves. Love also does not have to be rationalized with the human brain... it can just sweep over us without warning... carrying us like a huge river.
The Bible seems to offer mixed perspectives of love. Stories of Jesus seem to reflect a broader form of free-flowing love, while the 'love' of God is strangely demonstrated and distorted through sacrifice, tests, and conditions. These stories reflect the ideas and limited understanding of man (and the Bible's authors). Once a person experiences a pure rush of love for nothing in particular, they understand another level of experience that is possible, and this is not represented in the Bible because the Bible was written by men who had no idea of it.

The world does not run on "Agape" alone. It would be nice if it did. But wishing doesn't make the world something it isn't.

Good point. That's the problem with human created entities, they suffer from human foibles.RWStanding wrote: ↑Sat Sep 02, 2023 9:24 am Love?

only one word?
the whole thing was originally translated into Latin or Greek from Aramaic ...
dead language into dead language then translated into other languages...

Re: Love?
Is anyone actually saying that? Living without broader experiences of love might be likened to the limitations of living with a bag over one's head, in that life's vibrancy is small, blurred, and muted. A person can live like that, sure... but it seems worth mentioning/sharing that there are more ways to experience life and love because it can be empowering and rewarding to learn/discover how to do so.Gary Childress wrote: ↑Sat Sep 02, 2023 3:12 pm The world does not run on "Agape" alone. I know. I'm an expert on living without love. Still trying to figure out what it is.Lacewing wrote: ↑Sun Sep 03, 2023 1:03 am Living without broader experiences of love might be likened to the limitations of living with a bag over one's head, in that life's vibrancy is small, blurred, and muted. ...and when you say "I do" having placed your hand on the book, but in fact didn't, you can always say you were mistranslated.Impenitent wrote: ↑Sun Sep 03, 2023 12:07 am only one word?

It's all a theatrical farce. They might as well dress up in a costume too.

If I love you because you love me, that is mere trade, a thing to be bought in the market; it is not love.Gary Childress wrote: ↑Sun Sep 03, 2023 1:27 am I'm an expert on living without love. Still trying to figure out what it is.
To love is not to ask anything in return, not even to feel that you are giving something.
That's what love is.

With that attitude, over time one will risk becoming a doormat, and taken for granted.Dontaskme wrote: ↑Thu Sep 14, 2023 5:46 pmIf I love you because you love me, that is mere trade, a thing to be bought in the market; it is not love.Gary Childress wrote: ↑Sun Sep 03, 2023 1:27 am I'm an expert on living without love.
