Isn't it amazing how fantastic life is once you turn the TV off and forget about everyone else's problems.

When I'm not on this forum fixing the world and his wife, I spend most of my time playing Animal Crossing on my Nintendo Switch...now talk about being in your own little world, Animal Crossing trumps everything and everyone, where all problems melt away like a salamander in the midday sun.

Re: Quote of the day
I had never heard of Animal Crossing until just 10 mins ago on The Chase (Australia) the host said he likes it so much he uses it as an excuse to leave the Logies! I'll have to look it up..Dontaskme wrote: ↑Wed Aug 24, 2022 9:29 amIt is, but I cannot seem to give up my addiction to binge watching the new series of Love Island and Married at First Sight when they come on TVattofishpi wrote: ↑Wed Aug 24, 2022 4:44 am Isn't it amazing how fantastic life is once you turn the TV off and forget about everyone else's problems.

Not really, because it's more a solo game you play on your own.attofishpi wrote: ↑Wed Aug 24, 2022 10:22 amYes, it looks like fun. But you can visit other peoples islands and they can visit your island, but you have to either be sharing the same internet connection or if not you can create your own personal dream address that enables you to visit other islands and they visit yours. Best just to research it all yourself if you become interested.

It's really not my thing, but I can see why people enjoy those games. I haven't jumped into a game for a while, but I bought a fairly expensive force-feedback steering wheel and peddles last year to go with my VR headset where I love playing Dirt Rally 2.0. I haven't had the time to play that for about 3 months - I honestly don't know where all my time goes!Dontaskme wrote: ↑Wed Aug 24, 2022 10:34 amNot really, because it's more a solo game you play on your own.attofishpi wrote: ↑Wed Aug 24, 2022 10:22 amYes, it looks like fun. You can't drink and drive though - I am shit, end up running over spectators and camera crew!
Check out this chick (she's obviously not on VR but using 3 screens) - she kicks arse!

Wow, that game looks like a blast. Gosh I'm missing out. Maybe I need to expand my horizons. I'm just too lazy to be bothered these days to try out new stuff.attofishpi wrote: ↑Wed Aug 24, 2022 10:45 amIt's really not my thing, but I can see why people enjoy those games. Yeah, games are like that, either they are your thing or they're not...I know.
The choice of what to play is too much, thy cup runneth over...we're being swallowed up by the world of AI it's hard to tell the difference between video game and reality anymore.

Yeah it's brilliant. Reality is a convoluted apparition of the truth. Sometimes I sing "Oh dear what could the matter be, Brians fucked up in virtual reality.."Dontaskme wrote: ↑Wed Aug 24, 2022 11:09 am Wow, that game looks like a blast. Gosh I'm missing out. Re: Quote of the day
Simone de Beauvoir from The Mandarins
She was ready to deny the existence of space and time rather than admit that love might not be eternal.
No, really, it might not be.
She would never change, but one day at the touch of a fingertip she would fall to dust.
On the 14th of April, 1986 actually.
In a way, literature is truer than life, he said to himself. On paper, you say exactly and completely what you feel. How easy it is to break things off on paper! You hate, you shout, you kill, you commit suicide; you carry things to the very end. And that's why it's false. But it's damned satisfying. In life, you're constantly denying yourself, and others are always contradicting you. On paper, I make time stand still and I impose my convictions on the whole world; they become the only reality.
What's that make music then?
I could see no reason for being sad. It´s just that it makes me unhappy not to feel happy.
Or there abouts.
People seem to think that if you keep your head empty you automatically fill your balls.
Men in particular I'm guessing.
She offered her mouth to him, as if enchanted. A Persian princess, a little Indian, a fox, a morning glory, a lovely wisteria--it always pleased them when you told them they looked like something, like something else.
Well, they are after all men.

"The most common form of despair is not being who you are." Soren Kierkegaard
Lucked out there, didn't I?
"Solitude is the profoundest fact of the human condition. Man is the only being who knows he is alone." Octavio Paz
And, for the fortunate few, loving it.
"The most tyrannical of governments are those which make crimes of opinions, for everyone has an inalienable right to his thoughts.” Baruch Spinoza
Determined as it all is, anyway.
"Freedom is self-determination." Baruch Spinoza
Coming from him!!
For example...
"Men believe themselves to be free, simply because they are conscious of their actions, and unconscious of the causes whereby those actions are determined." Baruch Spinoza
Coming here for example.
"The educated differ from the uneducated as much as the living from the dead." Aristotle
Next up: the uneducated differ from the pinheads...

Edward Abbey
Orthodoxy is a relaxation of the mind accompanied by a stiffening of the heart.
Objectivism? That and then some.
I love America because it is a confused, chaotic mess - and I hope we can keep it this way for at least another thousand years. The permissive society is the free society.
My guess: this can be taken too far. And, for some, way, way, way too far.
Anarchism? You bet your sweet betsy. The only cure for the ills of democracy is more democracy. Much more.
My guess: this can be taken too far. And, for some, way, way, way too far.
Readers, not critics, are the people who determine a book's eventual fate.
The best seller lists...to cite just one grim example.
And the so-called 'political process' is a fraud: Our elected officials, like our bureaucratic functionaries, like even our judges, are largely the indentured servants of the commercial interests.
Let's call this crony capitalism, he suggested.
Instant communication is not communication at all but merely a frantic, trivial, nerve-wracking bombardment of cliches, threats, fads, fashions, gibberish and advertising.
Let's call this the media industrial complex, he suggested.

“What is right may well be said even twice.” Empedocles
You know, if anything is right.
“God is a circle whose center is everywhere, and its circumference nowhere.” Empedocles
You know, if there is a God.
"Having knowledge but lacking the power to express it clearly is no better than never having any ideas at all." Pericles
Clearly.
“Wait for that wisest of all counselors, Time.” Pericles
On the other hand, does Time know that?
"Well everybody in Casablanca has problems. Yours may work out." Humphrey Bogart
Of course that was all scripted, wasn't it?
"People living deeply have no fear of death." Anais Nin
When of course it's just the opposite! The deeper you go the more you have to lose!!

Ed Yong
The latest estimates suggest that we have around 30 trillion human cells and 39 trillion microbial ones – a roughly even split. Even these numbers are inexact, but that does not really matter: by any reckoning, we contain multitudes.
Any mention of this in the Bible?
Mucus is made from giant molecules called mucins, each consisting of a central protein backbone with thousands of sugar molecules branching off it. These sugars allow individual mucins to become entangled, forming a dense, nearly impenetrable thicket – a Great Wall of Mucus that stops wayward microbes from penetrating deeper into the body. And if that wasn’t deterrent enough, the wall is manned by viruses.
Any mention of this in the Bible?
I think the truth is that scientists, like everyone else, find simple explanations psychologically soothing.
Yo, Mr. Pinhead! How comforting is that?!!
There’s no such thing as alternative medicine; if it works, it’s just called medicine.
Even if it's all in your head, right?
Bacteria are metabolic wizards that can digest everything from uranium to crude oil.
Let's chalk it up to God's mysterious ways and move on.
Howler monkeys all defecate at the same time.
