Why is it called 'naturist'? Humans have clothed themselves since prehistoric times. We simply aren't equipped naturally for the elements. Being clothed is natural for humans. Why do nudists always come across as so weird and creepy? I couldn't think of anything worse than being around a bunch of smelly weird naked people. Sounds like a nightmare.
But unclad humans are less smelly than clad. It is called naturist because people who want to sunbathe and exercise naked often want to feel they are closer to nature than when clad.It is a romantic idea.
Naturists come across as weird and creepy because we are a sexualised society.
Who is, "we?"
Naturists come across as weird and creepy because because their weird and creepy, saying things like we just, "want to sunbathe and let our organs dangle and giggle while we exercise and feel closer to the mud and slime of nature." Don't wear clothes if you don't like. Just have a little consideration for others who won't be able to avoid having to see you in that state.

Instead of reading Mark Twain I would suggest you read the sign saying: " Do not operate machinery whilst naked." In respect of the elements, I'd just say best not play golf in the nude, coz you'll just get your balls wet. Anything else can be quite invigorating. As for not knowing where to put your keys and money whilst naked, a short spell in prison should help you resolve this problem.

From what I've seen there's not much risk of 'naturists' being 'sexualised'
Actually when you think about it humans look pretty awful naked--a bit like giant baby birds. Hmm. If anything so-called 'naturism' renders people practically invisible. Is that the point?

Naked human bodies look vulnerable rather like unfledged birds .

That is the point. Naturists do not view people as sexual objects whether they are bare or have clothes on.
There's a bit more to human sexuality than just clothes. Humans manage to find 'sex' in anything. As for what's going on in the mind of other humans, we can really only speak for ourselves--despite whatever little PC courses we might have done at Uni (generally something followed by the word 'studies')...

Sex is commercial. Together with snobbishness ,fear, and envy, sex sells stuff.

I've yet to see anyone mention the connection with nature that many naturists feel. My wife and I are vegans, we also like to go to naturist places occasionally, simply because it seems to feed a spiritual need in us, just as ethical veganism does.
