Really? There's still a tiger bearing down on him.Skepdick wrote: ↑Sat Mar 20, 2021 2:45 pmUsually, that's when the hunter shoots the guide in the leg...tillingborn wrote: ↑Sat Mar 20, 2021 2:43 pm A joke for you Skepdick: A hunter and a guide were stalking tigers. When they spotted one, the hunter aimed and pulled the trigger. His rifle jammed. At that point the tiger charged and the guide started running. 'Don't be a fool!' said the hunter, 'You'll never outrun a tiger.' 'I don't have to.' said the guide, 'I only have to outrun you.'

The joke being that if anybody's outrunning the tiger's meal, the gunshot wound to the leg might be a disadvantage.

I was told that some jokes are funny only because they are true.tillingborn wrote: ↑Sat Mar 20, 2021 3:06 pm The general rule with jokes is that if you have explain them, they're not funny.

Of course it's true.
Competition and self-preservation gives rise to unfairness and dirty tactics.
It pokes fun at human nature. That's why it's funny.

If only there was a snappy way of saying so; something like dog eats dog.
You mean like the original joke with tigers and jammed rifles?

You mean the joke I already knew, but you decided to tell it to me anyway?tillingborn wrote: ↑Sat Mar 20, 2021 3:34 pm You mean like the original joke with tigers and jammed rifles?
Which leaves stuck with the original question. How can I possibly tell you what you don't already know, when you can't even tell me what it is you don't know?

It's been done. If you're not happy with any of the current iterations, feel free to throw your own contribution into the ring.Skepdick wrote: ↑Sat Mar 20, 2021 5:14 pmIf only there was only one way to express the same sentiment.tillingborn wrote: ↑Sat Mar 20, 2021 3:34 pmIf only there was a snappy way of saying so; something like dog eats dog.
That's always a chance with telling jokes. Should people stop telling jokes because you might have heard them?Skepdick wrote: ↑Sat Mar 20, 2021 5:14 pmYou mean the joke I already knew, but you decided to tell it to me anyway?tillingborn wrote: ↑Sat Mar 20, 2021 3:34 pm You mean like the original joke with tigers and jammed rifles?
Tricky isn't it? The stuff I do know is dwarfed by the stuff I don't know. It's a bit like jokes.

That's been said already. Why are you throwing your own contribution into the ring?tillingborn wrote: ↑Sat Mar 20, 2021 5:46 pm Tricky isn't it? The stuff I do know is dwarfed by the stuff I don't know.
If it's tricky for you to know what you don't know, imagine how much harder it is for others when you ask them to tell you things you don't already know.
It seems to require skills akin to mind-reading.

My point exactly. If it helps you to put it into your own words, so that it fits your narrative, go ahead. If you need to believe that you are the only person who gets it, then believe it. If you were just a little bit smarter, I wouldn't need to ask, but why do people like you and Immanuel Can have to be right?

Seems this fits into your narrative quite well then.
I know that you and everybody else gets it. Which is just fine. What I don't understand is why you keep playing language games when you understand that they lead nowhere except in circles.
Surely you must have a reason for doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result? Perhaps you can start by giving your reason (your intentions and desires) a name?
Have you considered that we know that it's impossible to be "right"? And so that's not at all what we are trying to do.tillingborn wrote: ↑Sat Mar 20, 2021 6:56 pm but why do people like you and Immanuel Can have to be right?
I certainly know it's impossible, but for some reason it fits into your narrative to believe otherwise about me.

I have considered all sorts of possibilities, but I have to base them on the material you present. Where do you think the similarities between you and Immanuel Can stop?
As I have said, I am happy to be proven wrong. So show me that you are more than just a dick.
