Who will take the vaccine?

For philosophical reflections on the COVID-19 pandemic. How can philosophy help us to understand it, to combat it and to survive it?

Next they will be making it a criminal offence to not have the vaccine because we all have to do our bit to extend the lives of 99 year olds (it's cruel to have them miss out on a message from the queen) and obese smokers.

Yes... it's absurd. Wasting lots of money and resources for nothing truly of value: lots of continuously sleeping people with few visitors. I would never want to be a drain on the system for others if I lost my ability to create/enjoy value. I hope future generations have more choice and awareness to avoid all of that.

Poliomyelitis was commonplace in my childhood. I’m thankful that I was vaccinated against it, even if the vaccine was unnecessary to my staying healthy.

Likewise I didn’t contract Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Pertussis or Smallpox. Again, I might not have got them anyway, but I appreciate having been immunized against them.

Obviously I have no objection to vaccines, yet I’m reluctant to take a COVID vaccine. None has been tested over a sufficient amount of time to reassure me as to its safety.

There are side effects that occur when hundreds of millions of doses are given but that don’t occur after a smaller number. Normally this takes years. Expediting the approval process is counter to increasing the number of doses given.

I know that everyone has to credit T**** with acquiring the vaccine and that if you’re pro-T**** you will take the vaccine, but I am anti-T****/dictatorship and yet I’m unsure what I’ll do about the vaccine.

I suppose it still comes down to T**** v science.

That’s what I gather is going to happen since T**** is associated with the vaccine. Of course that means there won’t be any unity over this.

I cannot think what can go wrong as the vaccine against corona virus is not extenuated living organisms but simply spiky bits of virus. The active bits are not grown in eggs or horse serum,or blood, and are not injected suspended among allergenic fluid.

I think the odds are good that pro-Trumpers, being thoughtful and conservative, are watching England to see if folks start falling over or throwing fits after taking the vaccine.

Health care workers in the US are required to take just about every vaccine that comes down the pike. I think that most health care environments in the US are non-union, so the employers have a say in what happens on the property they paid for, and they will say injecting the vaccine for the masses into your body is one of the requirements they demand for the chance to earn future paychecks.

Is this vaccine derived from the bodily fluids of some other living creature that was infected and sacrificed? Or, does it come from a place like New Jersey where they produce inorganic flavour chemicals for food and fragrances for Christmas candles?

It has to be kept super-cold. Lots of wine gets subjected to the wrong temperatures and they still sell it. What about this stuff?

God promises a world without diseases.

I'll wait that one out, meanwhile, until that reality comes to pass, I'm taking the utopian realm of blissfull non-existence. :D

Vaccines! ...they can be shoved where the sun don't shine. Who in their right mind would want to impose a disease ridden world upon a child, so that it too will be forced to suffer. Not me. I'm done here.

If the virus is so dangerous to EVERYONE, then why are ancients in death's-door facilities being given the vaccine first?

here, medical workers come first, then the medically fragile, then the healthy folks

that's the plan, anyway

The 'medically fragile' are the ancients. The ancients are welcome to it. I never bother with a flu vaccine either so why would I get this one?
Seems strange that they found a vaccine ultra fast yet still none for MERS and SARS, which come from the same virus (and are far deadlier and kill the young which is far scarier than something that kills only those who are practically dead anyway).
There was something on the news about a 91 year old who was the first person in the UK to get the new vaccine, then rows of old people with their sleeves rolled up, happily getting jabs into their pale, skinny, wrinkly arms and leaving courtesy of zimmer frames or wheel chairs.

Actually the whole thing from the beginning has reminded me of a science fiction story I read a long time ago about the young being used as organ donors for the old who wanted to live forever. It also puts me in mind of the Titanic where old rich people got places on lifeboats ahead of young poor people.
In general the very old tend to be totally self-absorbed. I make a point of never asking an old person how they are because I don't have the time or patience to listen for a couple of hours to their in depth destription of their latest surgical procedure or how they 'had a fall' recently...
