What will it take to heal the divide

Leadership? Grass roots movements? A balanced agenda? Civil war? Riots? Social media? It will take care of itself over time? Or is it even possible to heal a divide?

It is said that a common threat unites disparate entities as a single collective agency. Coronavirus has not accomplished this, perhaps because there has not actually been a common goal (economic recovery measures v public health strategies) for this common enemy.

If not Coronavirus, then what else could be a path to draw us together?

The future is at stake, people need to unite one last time, and say no to free thought. Never again shall truth interfere with what's best for the many. People must do as they are told, believe as they are told, follow their masters without question and hesitation, as one, like in days past. 'Unite' is a very vague term. What exactly do you mean by it? Do you mean 'united' in the way in which we have wars? It never seems to be for anything worthwhile--only negative things like Nationalism or shallow wokie 'activism' that consists of social media virtue-signalling. Personally I detest the feeling of being 'united' with the general population. It feels like mob mentality. Most people I have little in common with, and I certainly don't want to be 'united' with them.

From what has been posted in this thread thus far, it would be fair to say that there will be no coalescence of the divided US society going forward.

This leads us to a temporary peace based on legislating against select behaviors, should there be any that as yet have not been outlawed.

Isn't that more to do with the forum itself being heavily engaged in wild melodrama than anything substantive?

Pretty sure the average Republican voter will be happy with a little bit of sane government for a while and so will the average Dem. You've got a president who is a bit boring and utterly uninspiring, but who comes with decades of experience negotiating across the aisle to get actual legislation passed. After the insane partisan bullshit that has dominated your last few election cycles, that should be a decent start.

Perhaps they should amend the Oath of Allegiance to "I will support and defend the Constitution and laws of the United States of America against all enemies, foreign, domestic and environmental".

Cold War - Red fear united Americans, since that time there is no unity, in fact 1/2 of americans like reds - trumpers.


there will be no unity - trumpers look to authoritarians to fix gov corruption, others live with it as better than the trumpers alternative - fascism.

the solution would be a removing of laws in State Legislatures that make 3rd/4th/5th parties impossible. but that will not happen because the machine - Republicrat )(dems/reps collusion) - keep all other parties being viable impossible, req of signatures - 70,000 + im my state made it take the Libartarians take one court battle to my state SC, to make them now - after 20 yrs of battle - to be registerable (I can now reg as a Libartarian (which i wanted to in 2004 - when they hated Bush jr for his ilegal war - and were quite liberal back then - but could not - now that i can, that party has shifted to trumpism and so have no wish to reg as one of them today).

this is one state - it took 20 yrs, still no Green Party reg in my state, nor constitution party. one state out of 50 and a 20 yr battle.

you asked me the fix, the fix is to beakup the duopoly (its no accident that the largest "politial party" registration is "independant" (which i a am and have been for 35 yrs now))- but the corruption is too strong and the popular will is too ignorant to know the problem, and so we are lost, no break up of the Republicrats, no 3rd party no 4th.
