I see. So what point do you think your illustration makes that actual officer body-cam footage doesn't?Immanuel Can wrote: ↑Tue Oct 20, 2020 7:23 pm Not data. Just an illustration.
But it makes the point very nicely.
You should watch it. Then you might even be able to talk about it coherently.

I watched it 5 years ago (when it first came out).Immanuel Can wrote: ↑Tue Oct 20, 2020 7:44 pm Watch it. Then you'll know. It's not the same at all. It's much more relevant.
The relevance of a contrived scenario to individual cases with their own merits still eludes me.

I did.

Maybe you should attend some force-on-force training and see if you develop any notion of nuance?

You recognise the "obvious" in a staged scenario, but you can't recognise the "obvious" in actual bodycam footage?Immanuel Can wrote: ↑Tue Oct 20, 2020 8:04 pm Wow.
Well, I don't chew your food for you, and I'm sure not going to explain the obvious to you. Bon appetit.![]()
Do you need dentures to help you chew your own food?

I think the adage was actually, “if there’s a bad apple and the rest of the apples don’t say anything about it, then there’s a culture of accepting bad apples and their bad behaviors, making all the apples part of the systemic badness”.Immanuel Can wrote: ↑Tue Oct 20, 2020 7:08 pm Do you remember the axiom "An anecdote isn't data"? Or, to put it another way, "one bad apple don't spoil the whole bunch, baby."

If a patient is going berserk in a doctors office, guaranteed the Cops will be called.Skepdick wrote: ↑Tue Oct 20, 2020 5:24 pmHere's something to ponder about.Immanuel Can wrote: ↑Tue Oct 20, 2020 5:08 pm Is it somehow "obvious" to you that that we can reduce lethal force, and still protect everyone? I mean, it's conceivable...but by no means certain, and certainly not obvious.
How has this become "obvious" to you?
Doctors deal with mentally ill patients on regular basis - cops don't.
Doctors have the instruments (mental and physical) to deal with this without violence - cops don't.
The point of training is to add tools to your arsenal so you can deal with various situations on a force-continuum.
If the only tool you have is violence, every solution is going to depend on it.

The cop happened to be at the hospital WHILE the patient was going berserk.
The cop took initiative and killed the patient.
Which is why the doctors are protesting - they insist the patient could've been restrained without lethal force. You know, exactly as they have done thousands of times before with other mentally ill patients.
It's pretty strange when unarmed doctors have bigger balls than an armed cop, eh?

I think that people are too literal and have difficulty understanding metaphor.
Or have you some proof that policeman should reasonably have known about the failures of some of their members in advance? I'd be interested in knowing what that proof would be.

I think you mis-understood the metaphor much like you mis-understand statistics.Immanuel Can wrote: ↑Tue Oct 20, 2020 8:33 pm I think that people are too literal and have difficulty understanding metaphor.
