I'm certainly not an expert on philosophy but I've studied a fair bit of it and pondered it a great deal throughout my life. I'm always fascinated by how much I've forgotten of what I learned and of how little real importance philosophy ultimately is compared to other more pragmatic fields of knowledge (such as agriculture for a very stark example). It always astounds me how little real advantage the study of philosophy seems to have afforded me. I mean, I still make stupid mistakes. I still suffer from things like sadness or anxiety as much as anyone else (if not more so in some cases). And there are people out there who seem to be very well ordered mentally who haven't studied a lick of formal philosophy. I've met a few such people in my life and it always impresses me.

Mine was one of the few posts that weren't insulting you and yet you chose to fire back an ad hominem at me. Why? It sounds to me like you might be one of those neophytes you talk about who thinks he's a "king" just because he's read some philosophy. No?TheVisionofEr wrote: ↑Tue Apr 14, 2020 9:17 pmYou are a moron.Gary Childress wrote: ↑Tue Apr 14, 2020 7:18 pmIn my experience, I think there's a tendency for neophytes of philosophy to often become overly enamored with the subject, which is not necessarily a bad thing as it lends to the intensity of one's study of it.TheVisionofEr wrote: ↑Sat Apr 11, 2020 7:07 pm The nyophites think when they have read a book they are king. 'Intellectual slavery' you do talk a load of old bollocks don't you. Can I assume you are not a graduate of anything?TheVisionofEr wrote: To smart to live in intellectual slavery for life. To the dead con contventionalists.
To claim some kind of intellectual superiority upon a Philosophy forum when you can't use a spell-checker or even spell the words correctly in the first place is just laughable.

You are very thoughtless. And truly were prepared for a life of intelectual servility in your youth. Now, for decades you will go on armed with the same mechanical habits. Very boring. Seek human education, rigid one.Arising_uk wrote: ↑Thu Apr 16, 2020 8:13 pm'Intellectual slavery' you do talk a load of old bollocks don't you. You can't even spell "prejudice" correctly and you're calling me a "moron?" You shouldn't even need spell check for a word that easy!!TheVisionofEr wrote: ↑Thu Apr 16, 2020 7:51 pmPlease don't lash out. The way you are is not my doing. Besides, maybe morons are superior. Do you mean ethically or epistemologically? If the former then please explain how and I'll consider a sincere apology but if the latter then I'd need to understand what you mean by a thought before I could consider a reply.TheVisionofEr wrote:You are very thoughtless. ...
You really need to use that spell checker before you talk about others being intellectual but as to my youth I was too busy out working and farting about to be bothered with academia and a higher education, it wasn't until later that I decided to study and then only because there was a recession and you needed a degree for even average jobs. And truly were prepared for a life of intelectual servility in your youth. ...
I doubt I'll make one decade let alone two given the life I've led but here's hoping and no idea what a 'mechanical habit' is other than autonomous skills? Now, for decades you will go on armed with the same mechanical habits. ...
So care to say what a "human education" entails? As it obviously doesn't include the basics of Reading, Righting and Rithmatic.Very boring. Seek human education, rigid one.
