Justification for continued existence

Post by matthewbartlett »

What reasons or justification is there that I will still continue to exist tomorrow? For instance, if I were to not exist tomorrow what I choose to do now will radically change. I may sleep instead of try to obtain more money.

How do I know I will still exist tomorrow?

You cannot know you will exist tomorrow. Since you cannot, what you choose to do now will likely not be a radical change.

The explanation for, or causes of, your existence tomorrow will be the same as they are today.

Those reasons and justification can be reduced to either, but not both, of 2 claims: a) atoms combined and evolved into today’s state, along with accessibility to critical resources; or b) God created human beings.

The problem with this mindset is that there will come a day when it will actually be true. But it will be true on that day, and that day only.
For all other days leading up to that day - it will be false.

In economics this phenomenon has a name: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Time_preference

With 100% certainty? You don't know.

With less than 100% certainty. You will be fine for the foreseeable future.
