People are not all the same. Yet all must fit into neat boxes, leaving the intersexed and trans to be reviled for the crime of not pretending to be normal.
I sincerely hope that each of you has a child with either ambiguous genitalia or is simply faaaabulous!
No one is saying they have to fit into 'neat boxes'. It's the bullshit that's unbearable, and the social engineering of vulnerable young minds and brainwashing them with ideas and concepts that they shouldn't even be aware of--a very dangerous state of affairs. Unfortunately religionists have got in on the act too, playing into the hands of the pink/purple haired political lobby.
Take no notice of the ridiculous title (this is what I mean about morons involving themselves in things they know nothing about--on all sides). Check out the woman at 2:18 lol.
The kid or his/her parents were paying for an education, not to have their child routinely humiliated by a professor.
The professor was unethical in not providing proper service to a paying customer - because he thought he had the right to impose his views on something that is none of his business. All that's needed is have enough respect to refer to a customer as they request. The issues is that there is no respect.
Pity the poor blighters, harmless but having to live every day surrounded at all sides by misunderstanding and hostility while vicious and unethical people are routinely lauded. Nightmare.
If the young man in question quietly lived as a girl, presented himself convincingly as a girl, didn't make a big show of his 'status', the professor probably wouldn't have said diddly.
More than likely, however, the young man made a show of his 'status', informing everyone that he was a transgender woman, demanding, demanding demanding. In this case, the young man made it the professor's business.
And: no, the customer is not always right...sometimes customers are laughably WRONG.
And: the service provider is not obligated to set aside his morals, ethics, principles simply cuz the customer's morals, ethics, principles differ.
In context: the professor is gettin' paid to teach, not cater to student's disorders.
I know exactly what you know about the circumstance, Greta, and, if I drew upon a stereotype, it's the one most frequently exhibited by the politically active transgenders themselves.

What is your sample size of politically active transpeople? Might that be skewed by the fact that the weirder the transperson the more fun it is to report?
Adults should take responsibility for their actions rather than blaming kids. Did the prof believe that HE would be the one to "wake the kid up"? Seemingly so, which would make him, if not a bully, then an arrogant, presumptuous, intrusive arse.
My 'sample size' is what I find readin' the paper.
Based on the story excerpted in this thread: seems the professor simply didn't wanna be forced to publicly agree to a falsehood. Didn't seem he had any interest in 'saving' the boy.

All he had to do was get on with the class without giving the kid gratuitous crap.
It was intrusive. Who wants some stranger giving them crap for being different, especially one who you are paying for a service?
Big brother is not needed if all his little delegates can do the job, each sticking their noses into others' lives, giving them crap for not being "correct" and giving them "hard truths" to beat them into line and also to display one's own credentials as an upstanding citizen, using the kid as a prop.
Many don't care about "falsehoods" - look at the Trump phenomenon. I never noticed anyone have trouble calling Dame Edna Everage "she". Nah, this was both grandstanding and intrusion.

For fuck sake. He was being a precious little prik. Why does he HAVE to be called anything apart from his name? I don't recall any Uni lecturer using any honorifics on anyone! What's wrong with just your name? Who calls anyone 'miss' these days? And he's not a 'she'. He's a 'he' in women's clothing.

No empathy. Damn sad. What if you had a son who turned out to be trans?
Whatever, at the very least the kid should get his/her money back and be compensated for waste of time and energy with that frickin' amateur.

That has nothing to do with this. Shove your emotional blackmail.
"All he had to do was get on with the class without giving the kid gratuitous crap."
Seems to me, based on the excerpt, gettin' on with teachin' is what the prof wanted to do. It was the student who raised a stink.

"It was intrusive. Who wants some stranger giving them crap for being different, especially one who you are paying for a service?"
What was intrusive, disruptive, was a dusturbed young man interupting class (for all those other payin' folks) so as to assert a fiction and demand observance of a fiction.

"Big brother is not needed"
Especially when big brother claims to be big sister.
Okay, it takes some people a while to catch up. The world keeps on changing whether you like it or not. All I see are young people as usual pushing back against boundaries imposed on them from on high without explanation. As always, they find themselves under attack from a judgemental older generation who forgot how they pushed boundaries when they were young.
At one time the older generation were respected for their wisdom acquired from experience. Now they are considered judgmental idiots unaware of the brilliancy and depth of the younger generation.
At one time Teachers were supposed to teach and students were supposed to learn. Now students teach and teachers bow to their assumed wisdom and demands. It is what's called societal evolution.
