Here is where we differ in our perspectives. The spirit may be immortal but we are not. From my perspective we are the tripartite soul as described by Plato. In the chariot allegory the white horse represents our higher part while the dark horse represents our lower part which has become corrupted. The charioteer must reconcile the attractions of both - above and below. Without the necessary nourishment from quality conscious impressions the horses lose their wings so to speak and become earthbound.
Secular progressive education doesn't recognize the higher and lower parts of the collective human soul or essence so has no idea how to educate the charioteer resulting in the gradual loss of our connection to higher consciousness.
When the charioteer loses its purpose and becomes nothing but an atom of the great beast, we lose awareness of our fallen nature. The result is spirit killing for us which of course has little to do with the quality of spirit which is the source of creation.
