Why we deserve depression and horrible things
If any of us have something bad happen to us such as an illness or some other horrible event, then that makes us deserving of more and more horrible things/illnesses in our lives. This is because we deserve more and more bad things to happen to us for having had something bad such as a depressive illness happen to us in the first place.
I will also apply this line of reasoning to those who live happy, blissful, rich lives who don't have depression. They deserve more and more happiness and wealth since their lives were happy and rich in the first place. Therefore, people who live blissful lives and have things handed to them are deserving of more and more bliss and things handed to them while people who live miserable lives are deserving of more and more misery.
It is just the law of karma I am talking about here. The universe rewards those who have it all good and well in their lives in the first place while the universe punishes those who have it terrible and unfortunate. It doesn't matter that it was not the fault of those people who struggle with depression and hardship. They will still be punished anyway since they are the unfortunate ones.
You reap what you sow in life. If you sow a life of depression and misery (even if it is not your fault), then you will reap the curse of such a life. But if you sow a life of bliss, happiness, and wealth, then you will reap the blessing of such a life. So that is the reason why you see rich happy people getting more and more things handed to them while you see those who struggle having more and more bad things handed to them.
Again, it does not matter who you are. The universe operates in such a way that happiness and bliss brings with it good karma which will bring more and more fortune in your life. But depression, illness, and misery bring with it bad karma which will bring more and more misfortune in your life.
So if you happen to be the fortunate one who is able to recover from depression, then that will bring a fresh flow of good karma back into your life. But if you happen to be someone who struggles with depression that is treatment resistant and doesn't seem to recover, then your life will only be a curse. More and more horrible things will happen in your life.

How depressing.
Re: Why we deserve depression and horrible things
Have you ever considered becoming a samaritan, Mozart?

So it seems at times when you are young. The bad times seem like forever. Studies have shown that people significantly underestimate how much they will change from decade to decade. Nothing is set, no matter how poor one's attitude may be.MozartLink wrote:... if you happen to be someone who struggles with depression that is treatment resistant and doesn't seem to recover, then your life will only be a curse. All they need is the kind of nudge that helps us to realise that this little community of angry post-apes in which we live is not all of reality, just a tiny part.
Spend time in nature. It's grounding. If there's no convenient local nature then notice the nature that's still in humans - be David Attenborough observing societies of humans - attributes that are poignant, misguided, strange, inspiring, ghastly, beautiful etc.

Glad to see your temporary happiness was brief and you are back to your normal depressive state.MozartLink wrote:If any of us have something bad happen to us such as an illness or some other horrible event, then that makes us deserving of more and more horrible things/illnesses in our lives. Theoretically we could each produce a chart of our little moods going up and down with variant frequency and amplitude.Hobbes' Choice wrote:Glad to see your temporary happiness was brief and you are back to your normal depressive state.MozartLink wrote:If any of us have something bad happen to us such as an illness or some other horrible event, then that makes us deserving of more and more horrible things/illnesses in our lives. This is the basis of statistical process control, which can be applied to any time and motion. As an objective record for analysis it can dispel delusions, because simple objective awareness of the past effortlessly dissipates delusion. Delusion causes suffering and depression is a form of suffering, which is a problem because of self-cherishing.Greta wrote:Theoretically we could each produce a chart of our little moods going up and down with variant frequency and amplitude.Hobbes' Choice wrote:Glad to see your temporary happiness was brief and you are back to your normal depressive state.MozartLink wrote:If any of us have something bad happen to us such as an illness or some other horrible event, then that makes us deserving of more and more horrible things/illnesses in our lives. Bad happenings are a break in the continuity of awareness. Bad happenings can change the state of consciousness by breaking continuity, but not completely. The memory of what was remains, and often the memory becomes a creation of mind to sustain some sort of life narrative, thus in memory "this" gets emphasized and "that" get minimized to sustain the narrative.
Clinging to any transitory state of consciousness in which thought and emotion appear, in which depression appears, perpetuates the continuity of that state. Breaking the continuity of any transitory state of consciousness can happen by chance or purpose, and this involves nothing more than stopping thoughts for however brief a time, for the effect of awareness without thought is timeless, and continuity can break/resume in an instant.

Who is "we", I would say that your attitude applies more to you than anyone else.
Re: Why we deserve depression and horrible things
Good point about breaking the flow of these experiences. Like any repeated behaviour, it's habit-forming and the more you do an activity, the easier it is to fall into that activity again. One needs to be aware enough to realise that one is "falling into a hole" and to break the flow of the experience, especially if depression is regular. Common moods and mindsets create "ruts" in the mind, making them easy to fall into without self awareness in the moment.Walker wrote:... The value of anti-depressants is to break the cycle of depression leading to more depression, giving patients a chance to practice feeling calm in the face of usually-stressful stimuli, allowing the gradual formation of new habitual responses to situations.

Re: Why we deserve depression and horrible things
'Anti-depressants'--the biggest misnomer and possibly the biggest money-spinner in the history if medicine. It's a disgrace the way they are handed out like lollies by doctors. They cause massive weight gain (which is hardly going to be beneficial to a person's mental health), and if someone is genuinely clinically depressed they have a high potential to literally shove them over the edge. They might be ok for those who aren't really depressed but think they are because they aren't buzzing around on a high all day long. I believe it has a numbing affect on them, which they must like or they wouldn't put up with all the horrible side-effects.
Irony--They only 'work' if you aren't actually depressed.

Some of us prefer to not inflict our downtimes onto others to depress them too.Greta wrote:Theoretically we could each produce a chart of our little moods going up and down with variant frequency and amplitude.Hobbes' Choice wrote:Glad to see your temporary happiness was brief and you are back to your normal depressive state.MozartLink wrote:If any of us have something bad happen to us such as an illness or some other horrible event, then that makes us deserving of more and more horrible things/illnesses in our lives. You don't 'deserve depression' - it is an illness which many people have. Have you tried ECT, different medications, therapy?
