What does (this) scripture mean to you?

"If anyone comes to me and does not hate father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters--yes, even their own life--such a person cannot be my disciple."

It seems to be saying that a person must renounce all of life and everything that matters to that person, in order to be suitable for re-programming of a specific nature which pretends to be ultimately spiritual, but which actually ignores and disrespects the glory of all that is. To me, that seems manipulated by the mind of man to gain unquestioning allegiance and control. It's absurd and creepy.
