~ HOPE ~

Post by Bill Wiltrack »

.

God's greatest gift to mankind or Satan's cruelest trick?

Apart from the religious associations above...is there such thing as hope?

Is there legitimate hope?

An overall hope?

Or is hope just that? ...an ultimately empty and false emotion?

Is hope separated from good & bad?

Hope is the last thing a dying man gives up...

Does the removal of hope break a spirit?

What do you hope for tomorrow & why?

Or do you just hope for a tomorrow? Without direction?

Do you wonder why 95% of the world hopes for a tomorrow when tomorrow will only bring hunger, pain, dread?

You do know it's a philosophy forum don't you? So go away and think about your questions and then come up with some answers we can discuss.

I actually thought about the perspective that you tried to articulate, after my original post upon this thread.

Hope...hope is actually a lot deeper than philosophy.

For the most part, especially for people like you, philosophy is mostly words.

A toy, a game. A mental play upon words. Definitions. Idol worship...

But hope. REAL hope is smack in the middle of emotion.

That is why I have maintained here that philosophy, REAL philosophy is beyond words. Much more than words. Much deeper. Much more.

Just more.

Thank you for allowing me this opportunity to clarify this important point.

Of course you did.
Hope...hope is actually a lot deeper than philosophy. ...
Is it? What does this even mean?
For the most part, especially for people like you, philosophy is mostly words.
No, it's critique based upon reason and the clarification of thoughts. Anathema to the gnu.
A toy, a game. A mental play upon words. Definitions. Idol worship...
See above.
But hope. REAL hope is smack in the middle of emotion.
What on earth does 'smack in the middle of emotion' mean? At the least I'd have thought it an emotion or feeling, so what feeling is it for you?
That is why I have maintained here that philosophy, REAL philosophy is beyond words. Much more than words. Much deeper. Much more.

Just more.
More meaningless words from you then.
Thank you for allowing me this opportunity to clarify this important point.[/size].
Clear as mud as usual.

No. Hope is a psychological mechanism to help people overcome a desperate situation.
Bill Wiltrack wrote:Is there legitimate hope?
Sure. If what you hope for has a higher likelihood of happening, it is a legitimate hope.

Bill Wiltrack wrote:An overall hope?
Never did think of that. So I have no idea.
Bill Wiltrack wrote:Or is hope just that? ...an ultimately empty and false emotion?
It is not an empty emotion. It is definitely useful as a psychological boost.
Bill Wiltrack wrote:Is hope separated from good & bad?
It is neither.
Bill Wiltrack wrote:Hope is the last thing a dying man gives up...

Not necessarily. I believe one can live without hope if you are psychologically strong enough. There is also the possibility that hope prevents you from adapting to a new situation and preparing to deal with it.

I am a realist so I do not hope for anything. I just wish for things and prepare myself for the possibility that they might not come true and what to do if that happens. Hoping might prevent me from preparing a plan B and a plan C.

I believe so. But this quality of hope is not hope IN someone or something. It is an inner quality which enables us to struggle for something that is seemingly impossible.
