Humour Poll

Would you prefefer humour left out of conversation?

No. I'm a sour puss, and a Calvinist.

I'd like an example of where humour has derailed a thread.

Humour on the forum can vary as to its form and purpose.

I either appreciate it or not, depending.

There, was that boring enough for ya' ?

In honor to the fallen hero, Muhammad Ali. RIP, as you lived:

Chances are better than fair that you know how metaphors work, eh? Could be why some folks don’t like minimalist art, or can’t even assemble a concept of why it exists. The viewer or receiver is required to put some of their own into the metaphor to create meaning. Sometimes a little, sometimes a lot. That could be a challenge for a tired old reactionary philosophy such as atheism, that sort of permeates the filmy filtrate of the box wrapper to synergize intent into pragmatic daily activity such as tap tap tapping the keyboard, in addition to cosmological contemplation by gazing at the navels (and other things) of others …well look at me. Of course I get your point, and am grateful for the kindness of your attention to address your concerns. And the punchline is … https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gpaOy8b8X6A

When I run my trains, I prefer that they not derail.
Gomez Addams blew them up.
Not to be too picky (not much) didn't he blow up the bridge to watch them crash?

I think option two "Only when it's a stupid thread." implies that humour needs to be left out only when it is stupid. Which is the wrong way from that intended I think.

So let's make sure that all stupid threads are treated with sober consideration, and that serious ones can be taken down with humour.

In my experience, people only do this when they are not capable of contributing in an intelligent and meaningful way. It is completely unnecessary. As many of the posters on this forum have demonstrated, it is perfectly possible to engage in serious discussion with neither intelligence or meaning.
Actually, you made me think why I often seem to derail a thread, Harbal. If I disagree with a premise, I feel obliged to point out the weakness of the premise, which takes the thread in a different direction. Just saying something is a truism doesn't make it so. We accept too many common sayings as truths, when, on examination, there's just no basis for them.

I know what you mean, atheism is just plain boring. I much prefer the God people, they provide so much more potential for taking the piss out off.
