Years ago I read Pappy Boyington's account of his experience as a referee for professional wrestling, and i understand the wrestlers put on a good show for the fans? Had roller derby gotten to that point when you did that, or was it still an honest sport, as opposed to a show for the fans.Dalek Prime wrote:Yeah, a bit younger than I, but they took it esy on me. It was nice to see women, in their own space, be able to be themselves and have fun, outside of me calling penalties on them for illegal blocks. I felt honoured, allowed in their space. Fond memories.thedoc wrote:Aside from the politics, I'll bet the women were fun to get to know.Dalek Prime wrote:It was volunteer, but so much fun. I miss it, but even there, there were unfortunate politics and personality clashes. Too bad, because it was a great time.

Anything associated with the Women's Flat-Track Derby Association is completely legit, doc. There is the fun hype though, but they all work their butts off to score points by rounding the opposing team's pack, led by the pivot, and it's up to the pack to block the opposition's jammers.

Thankyou, I figured a referee would know for sure. Roller Derby is not something I can watch on TV, since I refuse to pay for cable and it isn't popular enough for broadcast TV. However I did see one movie about men's Roller Derby with Micky Rooney as the star.Dalek Prime wrote:Anything associated with the Women's Flat-Track Derby Association is completely legit, doc. There's a big difference between the banked hyped stuff with people like Skinny Minnie Miller, and the women who dedicate themselves to flat-track derby. Banked stuff is drama aka pro wrestling. Flat-track is pure dedication and good fun for all. That's not meant to detract from the banked group, though. It requires the same skills and dedication.thedoc wrote:Thankyou, I figured a referee would know for sure. Pro wrestlers work hard too, and take a pounding night after night. You often hear about drug issues, because they end up taking pain killers legitimately, and get hooked.

I have no doubt that Pro Wrestlers work hard, but most people don't realize that it is called an exhibition for a reason, as opposed to flat track roller derby that actually is a competition.Dalek Prime wrote:There's a big difference between the banked hyped stuff with people like Skinny Minnie Miller, and the women who dedicate themselves to flat-track derby. I was just reading an article in the Harrisburg Magazine from June 2015 about HARD (the Harrisburg Area Roller Derby team), I didn't even know there was such a team in existence, and they are local and practice on the west shore. It just shows that there are more groups and events that are local than I know about.Dalek Prime wrote: There's a big difference between the banked hyped stuff with people like Skinny Minnie Miller, and the women who dedicate themselves to flat-track derby.
