That may be true, but you are forgetting that the some people from the same US also demand drugs that like marijuana should be freed from all restrictions. These types of demands provide excuse/justification to the line crossing to the other side (government) too. The intent/wisdom has be shown from both sides, otherwise this confrontation will continue.

Hi Sanjay,

I am aware that there are those who want all restrictions on drug use removed. However, as I pointed out the US has one of the highest incarceration rates in the world and that much of it can probably be attributed to the "war on drugs". Are you suggesting that the "war on drugs" in its present form is justified despite these appalling facts?
Not being a US citizen, i may be wrong in my assumption, but i do not think that US is one of the most incarcerated countries. What do you think about countries like China, Singapore, and do not forget North Korea. My guess is that US would not even come in even top 50. Most of the third world countries can be easily placed above US in that list.

There may be some not very justified looking laws/practices in present US war on drugs, but that alone does make US one of the most highly incarcerated countries. US citizens may pardon me for saying this, but i think that they have the tendency of blowing everything out of the proportion, especially if it is related to any form of personal liberty, though even very remotely. Some groups/people always keep looking for such issues there, be it guns, drugs or anything else.

All addictive and harmful drugs should be stopped, in any way which they can. Simple as that, be it is US or anywhere else. Though, i have heard about some racial discrimination issues used in this. Because of not knowing the details, I am not competent enough to comment on that, but if that allegation is really true, that should be stopped.
