I don't always agree with his assumptions, but I agree with this:

All that matters is contained between our ears. All drugs do is change your brain chemistry, and allow you to believe the things you think you've perceived during the trip are true, deep, or meaningful.

You and Sam should get along well (although I think you should reciprocate the favours). Like you, he claims that life only has personal meaning - and that's actually one of the assumptions he makes that I disagree with.

Explicitly your post provides a small summary of the standard materialist lines, without ever suggesting that the logical positivist view is nothing more than a safe baseline assumption made with what science knows of reality so far. Only last night in a dream coincidently, I was experiencing excrutiating pain in my foot...on waking this morning there was no such pain....pain is phantom, it's a trick of the brain.
