Speeding

Post by Philosophy Explorer »

There's a lively discussion going on at Quora about speeding. Here's one of the posts:

"There was a time in the 1980's that the Pennsylvania Turnpike gave you a toll ticket when you entered the Turnpike and checked the time when you turned the ticket back in at your exit. If the time was too short, you got a ticket. That's why I always stopped at a rest area on the Turnpike - to make sure that didn't happen. I used this as a real-world application of the MVT to my calculus classes for years."

Do you have any speeding stories?

One time I was speeding way over the limit on a Kentucky expressway. There was a state trooper on the shoulder, standing outside his squad car with a radar gun. He waved me over to stop, but I just kept going, and then I saw him coming after me in my rearview mirror, with debris shooting up from his wheels on the shoulder. When I saw his flashing lights, I figured he was going to throw the book at me not only for speeding, but not following his hand signal to pull over. When I finally did pull over, he came over to the car and said, "Man, you were really hauling ass!" but he didn't even give me a ticket. I guess he knew a prophet when he saw one.

I want to say that the law is borderline unethical if not completely unethical. What do you guys think?

I think that by the time driverless cars come along, it'll become a moot point.

Is this your opinion on all road safety laws or just on those relating to speed?
