Two questions:

1. is passive aggression aggressive or passive behavior ?
2. how do you suppress the behavior of a passive child ? by instigating them into action of some kind ?

Good questions.

I think of passive when I think of a passive aggressive person. Only because I like that type of personality better than I like an aggressive personality. Passive aggressive people tend to get their point across in socially acceptable ways....in a quiet under handed way, rather than an emotional blow out.

I wouldn't suppress the behavior of a passive child. I would reward it as it's own strength.

I see Obama as a passive yet strong personality. He simply stays calm in the face of aggression and lets the big aggressive oafs hang themselves with their folly/false bravado. No one can say Obama is weak. His passive intelligence is his strength. He has used it well to make the head strong republicans look like fools by allowing their rhetoric and actions speak for themselves.

There is only one way to get small children to behave the way you want them to behave and you have to start doing this from a very young age. When they behave appropriately reward them by giving them your full attention because that's all they want. When they behave inappropriately just IGNORE them. Don't yell, don't punish, don't threaten, don't even acknowledge that they exist. Just turn your head away and completely ignore them. They will howl with absolute rage because this drives them fucking nuts. Just calmly move out of earshot until the howling is less bothersome but under no circumstances acknowledge that you can hear it.

Kids are very quick learners and they hate this more than anything else in the world. If you and your partner are both very disciplined about this from very early on your kids will be model children and everybody will say so. Take my word for it. It worked for my kids and it worked for my grand-kids.

'Passive' has negative connotations. I imagine a 'passive' child as one who has been abused, and accepts his/her lot.
I've never had a tantrum or bad behaviour from any of my children. They just seem to know how to behave. I don't know if that has anything to do with parenting, but they never needed any kind of 'discipline'. I've seen children at the supermarket making the most hideous noises-- screeching and screaming, and the oblivious parents do nothing. Is it just that stupid people have stupid children?

I never had any experience of such behaviour with my own kids either, VT and yet I see it all the time in public places. As far as I'm concerned if your kids haven't learnt how to control their own impulses and thus their out-of-control behaviour before they've learnt to walk then you've left it too late.

I could even take them to restaurants as babies and they bothered no one--just sat and enjoyed the experience. No tantrums. No mess. And I'm not patting myself on the back either. I don't think I'm an especially good mother, although I would say I'm not a 'passive' mother. I have noticed it's the 'passive', oblivious parents that drive their children nuts and turn them into monsters. Indifference has that effect.

1. Since passive and aggressive is for manipulating behavior of others, I would stick it more towards aggressive as it is a distinctive force. Yet, it is it's own distinct behavior.
2. I would have conversations with an overly passive child and encourage positively. Dominant suppression of a passive mind could cause a break. Same goes for aggressive. Both are extremes and indicate a natural imbalance. Each person will require their own personal treatment. Lumping all under one way is wrong and has a great potential for more problems. It may seem to work at the time but, life throws curve balls.

There are people who do not feel like fighting at all.
They want to stay in a comfort zone and hate disturbances of all kind.

Passive aggression is mainly provocation and "yanking" (I learnt the term from an American who called his wife a "yanker"). Getting of other people´s nerves in an "innocent" way.

Fighting or not fighting is only one small part to aggressive or passive. You can have an aggressive personality without ever having a confrontation. You can be passive and have or start confrontations. The kid that wins spelling contests all the time,,, aggressive or passive?
The CEO of a company ,, passive or aggresive? The nurse that cares for sick kids? The local book store owner, the drunk passed out on the street, the drug addict, etc, etc. all can be either. Look past the fighting and see the whole.
