I didn't see that, but it's a common retort and so misguided a gnat wouldn't make the error -- especially in a philosophy forum.Dalek Prime wrote:I said that about Canada. This? or that? country fell apart? As a result of what? The Inglorious One wrote:Exactly. It took less than a generation destroy what took society tens of thousands of years to evolve. The long-term repercussions will be will be interesting to watch.van Keister wrote:Hail Rome!

Rome overreached its capability in administering too large an empire. It suffered from terrible rulers, who squabbled over power, while wasting revenues on vainglory. They suborned the functions of government and tried to keep up a huge, far-flung army without adequate production or tax base. And then they caught a viral religion. Yup. Farewell Rome.

Rather simplistic, but yes. Only this time the viral liberal ideology.Skip wrote:This? or that? country fell apart? As a result of what? The Inglorious One wrote:Exactly. Ah, I see. Lose a little of the fascism, lose the empire. I'm okay with that.

I think it is simply getting more polarised.vegetariantaxidermy wrote:Voluntary euthanasia, legalised marijuana, gay marriage. Perhaps your country really is starting to return to its liberal ideals.
What happens on the West Coast states is diametrically opposed to what happens in the South.
Whilst Federal edicts tend to be more liberal, middle america and especially the South are just getting more and more pissed.

a number of people in my neck of the woods think it was a bad idea for my wife and i to have gotten married - because we will eventually meet some good guys and fall in love with them and stop being lesbians

i mean when my bff and i became an open couple there were some people who were like "you came out? I did not know you were ever in!"
others were shocked
others tried to act normal and failed and acted real weird instead

A gnat wouldn't be on a philosophy forum... Or have the ability to make any rational error. So, do you deny Canada has not fallen apart because of gay marriage? Where's my error? Prove me wrong. The Inglorious One wrote: I didn't see that, but it's a common retort and so misguided a gnat wouldn't make the error -- especially in a philosophy forum.

Fuck them all, Kayla. It's your happiness, and you don't owe anyone anything, least of all an explanation.Kayla wrote:that was quite a while backHobbes' Choice wrote:Kayla wrote:Last time I looked you had a boyfriend. Grats for coming out.

“Prove it” is the last refuge of fools. You error has to do with time. Even Rome didn't fall overnight.Dalek Prime wrote:A gnat wouldn't be on a philosophy forum... All I'm saying is that evolution is the final arbiter of the value of “gay” marriage. Evolution is slow, but it is ruthlessly effective. In the end, evolution will decide whether same-sex marriage has survival value — not the courts, not popular opinion, not human sentiment or personal likes and dislikes. Law is life itself, not the rules of its conduct.
Re: Marriage For Everyone!
in evolutionary terms i do not see much of a difference between there being same sex marriage or not
if there was no same sex marriage i would still be living with my bff - and not as roommates if you take my meaning
we would not be able to adopt our daughter but in a universe otherwise (other than same sex marriage) similar, she would probably still be living with us
issues like inheritance and ownership and stuff and so forth would be more complex - but not really enough to deter us

The question is, is it your desire to conform to life itself, that is, to the ways of the universe, or to impose your way of life on the universe?

Re: Marriage For Everyone!
Kayla,
I think what the 'inglorious one' was getting at is that he believes that 'Rome will fall' because of the 'evolution of homosexuals'...as in...'if human all become homosexuals, then there will be no more babies as the homosexual sex does not produce babies.'
Trust me, I have been in plenty of discussions in my attempt to understand the conservative mindset and this is the overwhelming sentiment when it comes to trying to explain there bigotry and hate. They try to pretend they are being all intellectual by spouting what they think is practical science...obviously no one has told them you don't have to have sex to produce a baby, or that homosexuality has been around longer than mankind has inhabited the Earth, or that they should fucking get down on their hands and knees and thank 'God' not every single sexual act produces a child, as if it did, there would be no land to stand on much less feed the population.
Trust me...I have been trying to rationalize with them for years because I always thought reason was enough to change a person's mind. It's not with conservatives. Instead of being rational, they will think up more nonsense to defend their juvenile mind set...and when I say mind set...I mean MIND SET. They do not have the capability to think for themselves. They stick with tradition and what the patriarch of their family heritage has told them...for decades. And even when they have to be politically correct in certain social situations, like job interviews and such, they are just repressing their fucked up thinking for the moment...just waiting for the time when they come home and strip themselves of the facade. Why do you think Trump is doing so well in the polls? Everyone, including conservatives, know he is fucked up in his thinking, the only difference is, conservatives will vote for him and defend him when they feel safe and tucked away in their own environment. Even though they know he is wrong...they will vote for him!
I think the next time I speak to one of my conservative friends or family members, and they start to spout all of their bigotry and hate, I am going to ask them if, when they die and go to heaven, could they look God in the face and say the same thing. At least in my family, when you mention God and then ask a question, they answer honestly, as they feel guilty lying when you've just mentioned 'God' will know what is in their hearts and minds. As if God wouldn't know what they were doing if you didn't mention him. It's bizarre, but it works.
Try it sometime with your conservative christian friends sometime if you don't believe me. It's funny as hell. Sometime when you think they are feeding you crap, say, "Really?! Swear on Jesus, may you go to hell if you are lying, would you really do that (think that, say that,,,etc.) if you were speaking to God?'
9 chances out of 10...they will say, "No...it's wrong to think that (say that, do that, etc) about others. God wants me to love the person (then they will add..."but God wants me to hate the sin")."
My point is....they know it is wrong thinking....and yet they do it anyway...that is what blows me away every time. They know right from wrong but actively choose wrong and defend it with everything they have. Maddening.
