Asperger Syndrome

Post by David Handeye »

Ciao belli,
What do you think of the Asperger Syndrome? Do you believe that's a real personality disturb? a sort of sickness of the mind? Recently I have talked to several people defining themselves as aspies, but I got confused; actually I didn't find anything of the autistic spectrum in them, autism is a very bad desease, but it seems to me that they are just seeking something to say "we are different", or for example one of them told me "I am special, for I am an aspie". Asperger is on the autism spectrum but the individual can function in society and appears to be just like other people. Further along the autism spectrum you will find individuals who cannot function in society to some degree. Some individuals can not function at all without supervision.

I have. A bunch.

It's a real thing. And it can be a very, very hard thing for some people. But there are also some wonderful people who have it. Just be prepared for the unusual, and don't expect everyone to be the same, and it won't be a problem.

Yes, on one of the forums a member claims to have Aspergers.

The friends who are staying with us have a 36 year old son who is autistic, and staying here as well.

I probably know others as well, but people usually don't come out and identify themselves as Asperger.

For example I have noticed that most of them are, or define themselves, as a-sexual. Well, for me this is really unusual :!: :!:

I've known a few also. They can function, seem a bit obsessive, can strike one as rude, though they don't know this. A little hyperactive at times. It' a mixed bag, really.

I know one - a boy of 16. He was a 'difficult' toddler and small child, but very lucky in having an enlightened family. They had him assessed as soon as he was old enough to attend school, so he was diagnosed early and his teachers and classmates made aware of the reason for his occasional odd responses. He's attended group support sessions with five other youngsters with various not too severe personality disorders, where they share experience, exchange coping strategies and practice social skills. He's also had some speech therapy and of course, his extended family all helped by 1. accepting him and 2. explaining the contradictions he encounters in other people's behaviour.

The thing he seems to find most baffling is humour. Aspergers' kids tend to be very literal in their concepts and language; it takes a good deal of practice for him to interpret what people mean when they don't say what they mean. When he was younger, this boy found other people's laughter especially frustrating and upsetting. If he had lacked guidance, that alone (never mind all the failed communications and misinterpreted overtures from other children) would have turned him into sullen recluse. As it is, he's quite well adjusted - on superficial meeting, you wouldn't suspect there was anything different about him.

He's also highly intelligent and has a great affinity for motorized transport. Aspergers' kids also tend to be diligent and single-minded in the pursuit of information on whatever subjects interests them, so that they make accomplished specialists. My friend's grandson will probably be an engineer, perhaps a designer of cars or helicopters.

That's a good point, Skip. They are very literal.

Either you have very poor observational skill, or just haven't studied them for long enough period, to see their manifest of this mental state.

Are you trying to be funny? Do scientists who preform case studies just go meet some mental cases for a few min, and walk away again. Then they magically know everything about a mental illness?
