Yes, he is very much alive.

I pointed out when he slashed his wrists in front of me that he wouldn't get far cutting across his arm with a blunt knife. I was right.

Probably sounds callous to an objective onlooker. In fact, I gained a tiny bit of respect for him. It was the bravest thing he ever did.
