We don't have to renew our driving licenses every 4yrs and if we did, it would be done online. It seems that you have more strenuous checks than over here !!!
Our drivers licenses are also our ID's. We have to have an eye exam and a recent photo taken there every 4 years...but now they have something new where you bring in your birth certificate and/or passport and you get a gold star on your driver's license/ID card. That allows you to use just your DL/ID card to go through airline security, which I guess is going to be harder to go through in a few years? Not sure exactly, but I did it while I still have my info. I am prone to lose things...lol. hopefully not my DL!
What level of checks for firearms holders? If they had to queue and a religious nutter got in the way...
I am not sure since I have never tried to get a gun...but I think there's a waiting period? I don't know but I do know it's not as hard as getting a drivers license...except if you want to get a concealed weapons permit...then you have to go to school for a couple of days I think. At least here in NV...each state has it's own rules. I suspect in texas you probably have to be 10 years of age at least...lol...kidding (sort of).
I love your stories - and the way you tell 'em

Thank you and back atcha!
If I had a gun, I'd be dangerous
Sometimes, I don't understand this need to carry a gun to feel 'safe'.
There are clear alternatives; I wouldn't mind having a taser in my handbag
Even with that, there is no guarantee of protection.
I hear ya...but I guess in a land of guns one must be prepared? I dunno. Is it worth the freedom I ask myself. I guess the answer is yes...but then again, I am usually for more freedom than even my fellow Americans who arm themselves. For example, I am for traveling any-the-hell-where I please, I am for taking any-the-hell drug I want to, I am for having any-the-hell sex any-the-hell place I want....etc. Not that I would for sure do any of these things...but rather I think it is important for mankind to own the Earth he lives on as much as possible, and not step on the toes of other people's freedom. I do think in rare instances harmful things should be off limits to the general public but only if there is a huge danger to the population at large. Which guns...well can't really kill on a global scale that many people...so...I guess if that many people want them....however, I do wish they would be fair and allow me to have the things I want. More often than not, it's the gun people who want to restrict my desires of freedom...not the other way around. Go figure.
Anyway, we were having a philosophical party...
Can't remember why I started this
OK - from my OP:
Pluto started a thread 'papers pervert people'. The Sun is said to have won the election for the Tories. Rather than complain about any perversion, why don't philos set up their own Public Papers to (P)reach to the people.
What value elite academic journals/conferences when they only reach the select few? Why not gatecrash 'em or trash 'em?
Philosophy is often accused of not being relevant. It can't even stand up for itself. No power to the people.
What current philosopher can you think of that makes any kind of impact, anywhere?
I'm looking at Raymond Tallis as an exciting prospect. What say you?

Well, Jesus was a philosopher, right? And even he couldn't make a real impact (i.e. get people to do the 'right' thing). So I doubt philosophy could. But is that philosophy's goal? Does it have a 'goal'? I remember hearing a saying, "people mistake kindness for weakness". Could this be the problem? Is Philosophy is too kind? Or at least is it trying to hard to promote "good" instead of "evil'? Could be a buzz kill for some people.
Who would you choose as a 'mark' to be sniped?
A lover to be kissed and stroked?
A cloud of mosquitoes to be ignored?
Someone to be iced...
Those are hard questions! perhaps if you answered a few? Not sure where to begin...lol
Sometimes I just want to be left alone! I'm feeling 'NonSum-ish'....I remember in the end he told me that he didn't like philosophy anymore because it was the same argument over and over and nothing he could say ever could make a difference...or something like that. But I think he was wrong...it made a difference to me.
