His idea of a democratic forum is free speech and yet he routinely deletes
words and posts that he finds offensive or superfluous.
In society there have to be rules . There is no such thing as “free speech” only a perception of what free speech amounts to.
Rick Lewis should get a grip and lock this thread.
If he ever wants to be taken seriously as philosopher then this is what he should do.
You mean, 'me, with my 'intellectual' standing, cannot understand why all this nonsense is allowed to go on?'. Which is why you'll never be Admin or Mod here.
I should think that Rick Lewis would be to busy with his philosophy magazine and his family to care much about your opinion concerning what makes a serious philosopher or not.

The good character, on the hand, lives in an external world that is homogeneous with his own true being. The others are not a non-ego for him, but an "I once more". His fundamental relation to everyone is, therefore, friendly; he feels himself intimately akin to all beings, takes an immediate interest in their weal and woe, and confidently assumes the same sympathy with them. The results of this are his deep inward peace and the confident, calm, and contented mood by virtue of which everyone is happy when he is near at hand.

It has been my observation of life here that this is liken unto a University situation where ALL Participants need to learn self expression, clarity of expression, fluency in academic speech .
I keep a blog devoted to this purpose
because babies it is PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE it takes time to learn how to READ PHILOSOPHY as much as to WRITE about it.
There are obviously people here who are far up the spectrum here, just there are others stumbling onto the forums in the first place.
In addition I have seen for the first time displays of intellectual snobbery, self superiority etc. I don't remember this at University or at LSE External but this Forum is bringing it well alive. The young are sneering at the older persons in a way more redolent of ageism because they are young. I am trying to take this in my stride and take a friendly [intellectually] enabling/redeeming attitude to people which at least facciliates intellectual discourse on a variety of subjects of which I am completely ignorant-bar BA Hons Government Sociology Essex and LSE External Extra Mural Diploma in Economics (LSE External/London External both stonkingly prestigious) of 20 years ago.
Peacemaking and TLC may seem counterproductive and lacking in judgement but it is a way to make friends and influence people.
I only hope we can all grow with the philosophy we have-however we arrive-and learn to discourse with one another with an element of peace.
peace out

You are living in a dream world.
You don't know anything about Schopenhauer.
You don't know he pushed an old woman down the stairs for talking outside his room , for which he was sued and had to pay out until the old bag died. You don't know he advocated that no one have friends because
they would not understand you.
You live in a world of incompatible values .
A world of scare resources in which good will permeates only the surface layer of life.
Beneath this is predation . Socrates was put to death for ideas. Barbara Brooks should be put to death for pretending to have ideas.
The Mod on this site is a fucking loser and a hypocrite.
He deletes what he calls Muppets but doesn't touch Professor Golly because prof.golly is him. arising the cock sucking loser of all time.
grow up and smell the fucking coffee before it is too late for you. Life is war.

Schopenhauer and the Smell of Noise
In some ways we're all living in our own dream worlds. Our contradictory representations of the world are not Truth.Straw Dog. wrote:You are living in a dream world.
It may be that Schopenhauer got a bad verdict about the old woman. He claimed he never pushed her, just helped her away. But he was out of the country when the trial occurred and thus couldn't defend himself. However, you're right he was a bit of a bastard. Yet he did write that compassion was a positive.Straw Dog. wrote:You don't know anything about Schopenhauer.

No argument here. Wait to see what happens in 2009 now that the economic partying around the globe has ended (economic partying = borrowing from the future). I think it will be quite ugly. Predation will come on strong.
Even if it were true that Socrates was leading the youth astray perhaps he shouldn't have been put to death for his ideas. But Socrates was a threat to the powers that were. Barbara Brooks is not influencing anybody to the degree that Socrates did.Straw Dog. wrote:Socrates was put to death for ideas. Barbara Brooks should be put to death for pretending to have ideas.

The results of this are his deep inward peace and the confident, calm, and contented mood by virtue of which everyone is happy when he is near at hand.
Then after saying this he "helps" an old woman down the stairs.
The reason Schopenhauer was out of the country is that he knew he would lose the case and that he would have to lie under oath to defend his position.
The fact of life is that incompatible needs coincided at that point in time.
Schop. wanted peace and the old woman wanted to talk.
These rival needs spike the neural gateways and promote powerful contrary positions.
No amount of philosophy can disengage the elements of evolution that are in built in animals.
Moreover ,if you take away these impulses you would have a being that became prey to its rivals.
Those low on neuroticism end up the subject of predation and are killed off in the competitive environment.
Suspician and caution and readiness for defence and attack are human
neural programs designed to protect the species in an uncertain and dangerous world.
Remember one most important thing about life.
we eat the flesh of animals and animals eat other animals and animals eat us.

Our actions are our accomplishments and that lay in knowledge and determination. Only purpose is what we do to hold ourselves responsible. To keep working and actualizing and bring to light and established as something good and eternal.
I refuse to be led astray by the semblance of reality on the part of what is presented to abandon my purpose with idle thoughts and purposes, and to keep holding on the original content of purpose until it has made actual; The purpose of our action has taken place; as a purpose. Where each moment already presupposes the others, and hence seems unable to find a beginning, because it only gets to know its own original purpose but in order to act we must have that purpose beforehand.
For negativity is essential and implicit, its nature is beginning, means, and end, to all in one. For what seems to be, a reality confronting us is implicitly our fundamental nature, which has merely the objectivity. Ability is likewise nothing but individuality with a definite original constitution looked at subjective internal of purpose into actualization.

Then purpose is an opposition to our inner character purpose abolishes this character, and make oneself active being—an actual realized individual objective being. Purpose goes beyond self to perform; not feeling or lamenting or remorseful can stop it: all that sort of thing arises from a reflection, which imagines another content and another inner nature, not me. Mine is to be found in the actual carrying out purpose.
Whatever happened that brought me from the darkness to the daylight I've attained a sense of joy in myself.
Even now as disregarded and hurt I am here still; I force my way by natural appeal and the light of reason to write my philosophy.
I have endured the highest of all knowledge, which is good. This took a long and circuitous road and now nothing short of the most finished picture. All one can do in this world is good and that is the highest of all gifts of humanity.
If philosophy were mere opinion then it would be a very tiresome study. Thus, what is needed is a willingness to give profound thinking that exalts infinitude of ideas and truth not superficial rhetoric.

Straw Dog,
As you are fully aware I'm not deleting your muppets for being sock-puppets but because you are using them as a mob to browbeat others.
Members can have as many avatars as they like but if they use them the way you do then I'll be deleting their posts as well.
You have broken the agreement about repeating the Dog Houses 'mob rule' behaviour in others threads so I'm carrying out my promise to you.
You will note that I'm deleting only the posts of your muppets that are being purposively offensive and not you but keep it up and the decision will soon be out of my hands.
