A broken heart happens when someone you trusted deceives and you feel like you're going to die, but you don't. Live through that and you will know what one cause of a broken heart is. There are a few others.

The emotional shock is so big that the heart stumbles, chokes and cannot go on.

A similar phenomenon is when one becomes very much disillusioned, someone who believed himself to be a great artist for example, and goes mad because the truth is too much to bear for his shattered ego.

A similar phenomenon is when someone is witness to something very shocking and turned into a zoombie (like a boy in a novel by John Grisham, I think it was "The Pelican Brief").

I believe "Tommy" was based on a similar idea.

Yes, I probably mean Tommy if he is the boy.

There is also a film by Pasolini with the title more or less "Theorema of love" in which a young girl is frozen mentally because of ... (I don´t quite remember what) and has to be delivered into a mental hospital.

A broken heart is a poetic way of speaking.

Adrian Mole´s heart was broken and he called his dad and told him about it, and to comfort himself he sang "Stand by me".

Being dumped is a terrible experience.

But: Sometimes a different kind of relationship can be developed with the ex. A more appropriate one, and less prone to failure.

An emotional feeling is in fact consciouse awareness. So yes your conscience is undermined by a bad experience but is that ego.
