What Is Man's Life Purpose
What Is Man's Life Purpose
Hello,
I've been thinking about this for quite a while now and I would love if someone would give his opinion about it.
I've been reading about warfare and it seems that "95% of societies are violent", according to Lawrence H. Keeley, an archeology professor at the University of Illinois at Chicago.
Man since the dawn of time has been violent and had the urge to conquer, rule and impose his will upon others.
Military conquests since thousands of years has shaped history and created civilizations.
Why is that? What makes few number of people have the urge to kill, slaughter and annihilate people by the millions to attain power and form empires.
Could few people be born with a purpose to rule others by "ethic-less" means while others are born to live by boundaries and "ethics" and be ruled and have their lives controlled by others?
Any input is appreciated.

Re: What Is Man's Life Purpose
In the nursery school we start with violence trying to get the best toys for ourselves. It could be in our genes.
Then we learn cooperation and making contracts because this reduces stress and injuries and creates a pleasant atmosphere in which we feel better psychologically.
The surpervising adult knows about this proces from his own experience and from his own education so he tries to speed up the move from violence to the cooperation so that the little ones save some time and use it in a more productive way.

.
This is a GREAT topic. Well presented.
My take, at this point in my life;
Mankind is basically selfish, mean, and stupid.
We think that our ability to have a seemingly evolved intellectual function and, at times, a heightened consciousness help or changes things. It doesn't.
Welcome aboard. Excellent first post.

You fill to sheet. Waffle and denigrating.
You won't get an answer to anything from Impenitent. He simply does not care for anyone but himself, and he is incorrigible in that regard.
There is no purpose to life except your own? If you won at life congratulations. And be happy- no one else will.

Elephants don´t kill to eat.
We are violent in order to survive if there is no better and more efficient option available.
Humans like to be lazy so they have been working on these better options for thousands of years.

Alpha males seeking to dominate other males. And this is not just confined to humans as it exists with in the
animal kingdom in general as it is a psychological desire to assert dominance. And in humans it is referenced
from a biological perspective by the production of testosterone the male hormone responsible for aggression

And what is the dominance good for ?
For making sure that one has enough resources for oneself and one´s off-spring.
Violent actions tend to destroy resources as a colataral damage so better ways of achieving this goal are preferable.

Re: What Is Man's Life Purpose
It is the natural way for better or for worse because that is simply how evolution functions. So what
humans think of it is neither here nor there. Now natural processes can be understood but changing
them is something else entirely. You born. You live. You die. For that is how it is for all living things
Being at the top of the food chain does not alter that by one jot because the rules are still the same

When thinking comes into play evolution does not work as it used to.
Thinking allows the non-violent ones to trick out the jocks.
And so they die out like dinosaurs.

I googled your mum. Interesting but pointless. Unless you want some light relief.
Everything in fact- if not philosophy is useless in 10 years or at least 50% bollocks.

Re: What Is Man's Life Purpose
Thank you all for replying.
Let me further elaborate on my dilemma.
From ancient times till the present, it seems that most of the people who really changed the course of history, have done it through violence, murder and using other people's blood and sacrifice to reach their own selfish purposes. Alexander, Genghis Khan, Hitler, Stalin etc. Currently, we have the Chinese elite trying to expand and form an empire, Vladimir Putin trying to build Eurasia, the US empire already built and like the Roman public during the heyday of the Roman empire, the American public too is kept occupied between bread and circuses seven days a week when soon we may (unfortunately) see boots on the ground in Syria.
Whether you're an Athiest, Thiest, Agnostic, Republican, Democrat, Communist, Zionist, Nazi, Catholic, Protestant, Hindu, there's always a few people at the top with real power controlling the public and using their blood for more power.
Heck, even Albert Einsten was instrumental in facilitating the creation of the Atomic bomb! We was used, just like any factory worker was, to further the ambitions of the tiny few in power.
Is it possible that this is the way Life is created?
I'm not a WWE fan (I was when I was a kid) but I'll use it as an example. In WWE, a promoter needs three types of wrestlers, a Lower Card, a Mid Card and a Main Event. Imagine if every Lower Card, studied Marketing and combined it with a little bit of creativity and figured out a way to be more "marketable" and thus a Main Event type of wrestler. The system would be broken! There always must be people who "aren't good enough" for wrestling to be put in the Lower and MidCard.
This is similar in life. Imagine if every waiter (or any other low-level employee) wanted to rise up the ladder and become a manager. And after that maybe take Business and Marketing courses and start his own restaurant. And maybe after that bring in investors and start a chain of restaurants. Society would fall apart!
You need children with poor education to fill some of the jobs that the children with good education will not take. You need the children with a bad childhood to take the jobs (legal or illegal, ethical or unethical) that the children with a good childhood will probably not go for and so on.
Could this be how Life is? If yes, then morals are just thoughts implanted into our brains by our upbringing, society, TV etc. but aren't necessary true. They're just the Status quo created by society with the help of the Media. 70 years ago, Racism was the Status quo, now it's insanity to be racist. The Status quo is Islamic countries is different from the Status quo in the US. An American will say that the Status quo in US is better while a Saudi Arabian male would say that the Status quo in Saudi Arabia is better. And who's right and wrong? Both! It's just a matter of perception.
The 1 000 000+ Iraqis who died after the 2003 invasion are the same as the people that died in concentration camps and the same as the people who were killed by Caligula, Attila The Hun and Hannibal. Just "unworthy victims" as Noam Chomsky puts it.
Who remembers them now? Nobody. They're just a number being studied by Historians while History is being written everyday to be also studied decades later with History's victims also being just a number in service the ambitions of few people.
N.B: My post may sound "elitist", but that is not my intention at all. I'm actually just a University student who can barely pay his bills while trying to forge a good future for himself.

Morals have no value as concepts if they are not evaluated by ethics.
