Give Peace A Chance

Come again?

Despite how and what some people think, especially those with narrow and selective focuses, peace is being given a chance all over the world. It isn't easy but the idea is gaining steam since it speaks more to human aspirations and desires than war.

This article could have included the fact that the nature of war and peace has changed. We can see this in two recent, separate events, in Ukraine and with ISIS. Despite the seriousness of those conflicts, there is more peace in the world today than there ever before, especially when you consider the larger number of people in the world. The wars that do happen today are more contained to the areas of conflict, without the spillover effects they once had, such as the spillovers that occurred during the two great world wars of the last century.

In one instance, the attacks on 9/11 could have sparked a world war, which in an earlier less sophisticated world could have really happened. However, the world did not go to war, nor did the attacks initiate a clash of civilizations as some had hoped for or expected. Instead, those attacks galvanized a global interdependence and openness that had been occurring prior to the attacks on the US. And as I believe, because of those violent attacks, the world deliberately acted in the opposite direction, taking steps to become even more interdependent and interconnected, like it is today, as a way to inoculate and protect itself from future upheavals to its peaceful progress and growing civilization.

The war in Yugoslavia (1991-2001) is another example of an internal war not spilling over its boarders, like events did there in 1914, which kicked off the first world war. It was also contained and prevented from expanding into a bigger war by the peace that had developed over the years amongst its surrounding neighbours within Europe.

Furthermore, during the period of Cold War - the ideological battle between East and West (1947-1990), there was a different kind of war and peace in the world, which had never existed before. During that period PEACE certainly was given a chance, a big chance to develop. Otherwise, instead of the period being one of Cold War it could easily have been a hot one, far, far more destructive than its two predecessors, WW1 and 2.
