Consciousness does exist dependent & independent of the brain.

It doesn't entirely we can know that much for sure, otherwise people with brain damage in the same areas would not experience the same conscious difficulties.
Personally all this spiritual bs tends to leave me a bit cold, it sounds more and more reaching as the years roll by and our understanding of brain function improves. That said people are welcome to believe whatever they like, but it's mostly just wishful thinking and based on a persons faith in unexplained or unexplainable phenomena and God of the gaps style reasoning.
If the impossible did happen and the consciousness was somehow completely independent of the brain which merely acted as some sort of condiot for the soul. Well who cares, you'd think there'd be some proof of that in that brain damage would be fairly irrellevant as long as the soul remained undamaged, since that is where consciousness resides, presumably the brain does not need to have differentiated areas for different functions if its all one homogenous soul just an on off switch to put it in sleep mode, which also begs the question why is the brain so large if it just relays information to our bodies..? And why does brain size proportionat to body size relate to intelligence..? And about a thousand questions that probably would be ott.
