Thanks. I didn't know that. I saw it in a theatre.Blaggard wrote:Das Boot was a mini series by the way in 4 parts IIRC, and it was brilliant. They condensed it down to a film though, the film was pretty good but I think the full deal was much better. I would recommend the original series. Very dark and realistic though...

Re: Recommend me a movie.
Yeah they showed the full series on BBC2, it was 6 parts by the way I looked it up. You probably didn't lose that much as the film was very long and no doubt included most of it or at least the best bits, but I do imagine the series was better. But meh as long as you saw it, it was a masterful piece of work, no doubt, film or not...vegetariantaxidermy wrote:Thanks. I didn't know that. The scientology epic Battlefield Earth has got to take the John Travolta crown for bad movies he has appeared in.
Re: Recommend me a movie.
Watched a quiet little film called Dish last night, about the Australian facility that helped televise the first moon landing.
I recommend it to vegetarian pacifists and "CERN lovers" - no carnage, no rooftop chases, no blowing shit up, no angels or miracles, almost no profanity.
But then, I enjoyed Contact, so what'd you expect?

A movie without miracles and Angels, almost no profanity, car chases or blowing shit up? How the hell did they sell that to the producers?
In all seriousness though I have not seen it and now I want to.

Excellent movie. Australia makes some great films. The Castle is funny and quirky. Strictly Ballroom and Muriel's Wedding are a couple of other goodies.Skip wrote:Watched a quiet little film called Dish last night, about the Australian facility that helped televise the first moon landing.

And let's not forget The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, that ping pong ball scene will stay with me forever.

The Misfits
Written for MM by Arthur Miller. You'll not forget her in this, amazing acting by all three. Montgomery Cliff, (MM and Clark Gable's final film).
One of its lighter moments.

Wolf of Wall Street was pretty good. The one thing you can take away from it is possibly that bad people are just bad people, and that no one knows how the stock market is going to work, no matter what they claim. People the stock market is a gamble, people who play stocks and make money are just lucky in general, ok you might know something but you can never predict how economics works. Remember the bookmaker always wins in any gamble. The film makes that point very well and that apparently hookers and cocaine drive the stock market, which explains a lot. j/k
Very funny film though, and Leonardo De Caprio is pretty good, but then he always is.

I saw that film, and enjoyed it, but then I'm a bit of a science nerd. I had a copy of it, DVD or VHS, I don't remember, and I can't find it now.Skip wrote:Watched a quiet little film called Dish last night, about the Australian facility that helped televise the first moon landing.

Re: Recommend me a movie.
hmm never seen the series.
Not seen Bruce Lee reborn although no offence it sounds like the title of a B movie, although I am sure it is not.
Mentioned Prometheus before, it had some good ideas but it lacked a lot in the plot development, it's a movie I think you watch and think, it sadly could of been done so much better. It's certainly not a bad movie but it's no Alien or Aliens.
Source Code is a great psychological thriller and I would recommend it to anyone, the whole idea of a man out to save people in another man's body before the shit hit's the fan, really ramps up the tension.
Cape Fear well a classic, 'nuff said but I thought the Simpson's cover with sideshow Bob was quite amusing. Gregory Peck played a charming but creepy recidivist very well, whilst you don't ever empathise with any of the people in it, you can see the perspective of both the lead, and the Lawyer who sold him out.
The Andromeda Strain one of those movies that you watch and it just makes you feel uncomfortable, but very well acted, and very well written, kind of before it's time with the fear of super diseases spreading to the general population.
The Green Mile is another Triumph by Stephen King it's a pity his horror stories aren't quite as well told as his dramas, not quite as good as The Shawshank Redemption, but the guy does just have a talent for writing creative fiction in almost any genre.
Not heard of Mr Ecletic I should probably look it up.
Two movies I'd recommend if you like films about immoral lawyers or martial arts are The Devils Advocate, Al Pacino Star along side Keanu reeves; let's face it anthing with Al pacino in it generally is going to be good he doesn't make many bad movies. And Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai, Forest Whitaker is one of the best actors in modern day cinema, and if you have any doubt I'd also recommend The Last King of Scotland, about the shocking reign of the African dictator Idi Amin.

Both ghost dog [a gem] and devils advocate [advocatus diaboli]
i have on my hard drives./movies /drives e&f. ~1.73 tb
Bruce lee reborn is my description of flic 'homefront'
what did you think of 'Adjustment bureau'?
Also while not a horror aficionado. 'The Ring' is 'disturbing' And to me the best horror genre flic
and just plain great story.
I agree on Andromeda. And also colossus the forbin project. They would be prime for a remake.
And King. your appraisal is to me correct.
sigh....
So many good books, so few good movies in comparison.

Re: Recommend me a movie.
The Adjustment Bureau I mentioned earlier, A P.K. Dick adaptation, a great film about a secret organisation that controls the world, meaning we have no free will, who may or may not be angels under God, and in fact most definitely are not...
Excellent film, in fact any P.K. Dick adpatation made into a film is going to be good from Blade Runner, Total Recall to Screamers and The Imposter. All great paranoid fiction from the master of the hidden organisation that is controlling the world/who is human and who is not type genre.
