What to come after the human brain project?

How should society be organised, if at all?

What to come after the human brain project?

Post by The Voice of Time »

The science and the technology to account for variations in humans and provide answers for what's needed in the huge variety of states and configurations that human beings embody over the course of their own lifetime and over the stretch of all different unique human beings.

Such a tool of knowledge and calculability would be an extreme boost to every nation and to humanity as a whole, and provide a groundbreaking new platform of human self understanding and ability.

I think this should be the focus of the European Union and its partners next, could there possibly be a more pure goal and research?

The latest project is mapping all the connections in a human mind. It is clearly more than the sum of it's parts, this like the genome project to map human DNA is it is hoped going to lead to some understanding of how the map of the mind, relates to consciousness and or processing in any form. We will have to see...

I have a feeling you did not actually read what I wrote, only the title, because you were certainly not responding to me ^^ Just throwing some random thoughts about?

No I read it but it's a post it's impossible to really discuss because it is speculative. So I and sorry for this tried to introduce something that wasn't. Fair enough I wont bother next time, I'll just let your thread plummet to oblivion with no replies. Message received. ;)

What comes next after political crap, who knows, but sure as hell not getting the benefits of government or Europe in my country. Science is certainly more ammicable to ideas, and sadly it was set back 40 years at least by the cold war meaning states that were opposed could not talk to each other. But hell dude, politics is still the worlds toilet. What are you expecting from the morons who run governments: magic? It's still a depressing mass of self interest we live in, and outside of science it probably will remain so for the foreseeable future. Sure Europe I think coming together was a step in the right direction but it's still shat on from a great height by self interest. Why discuss a shit hole?

Do you mean this to be considered in light of the binding problem of consciousness? On the other hand you might be talking in more general terms.

I don't see how the human brain project is a shithole? It's a great endeavour and very promising undertaking, the kinds of like you see seldom in history and which the future will remember with great delight and smiling hindsight.

A great many nations go together to understand the brain and provide a new foundation of knowledge for all of humanity, my thread is about what should come after such a great thing, and I'm thinking we should try and outdo ourselves, with something greater.

You are welcome to offer maybe another alternative to my suggestion above, I'm hoping for debate regarding the future of great human projects in science.

Not so, I'm talking in more general terms. Object detection is not really an issue at the heart of this kind of science and technology we would have, but it might very well offer insights of course. Though the human brain project would more likely offer insights.

How so? With respect to Europe.

I think they should focus upon sorting-out the economic mess that the single-currency introduced when they allowed the unsuitable to join. After that they should focus upon tax, benefits, health and a unified political and military system that does away with the nations. If we want a Europe that is capable of standing up to a resurgent expansionist Russia.

You mean they should totally discard doing great science that benefits all of humanity? In favour of militarization and enforced centralized government?

To be honest I have no idea what you are talking about with respect to this great science or this human brain project but on the whole I think politicians should stay the hell away from deciding what science should be studying or not. At best they should just give them the money and let them study what they like. The EU is looking more and more like the Hapsburg or Austro-Hungarian Empire in my opinion and if it is to survive then it better start addressing its inherent undemocratic nature and start to offer its 'citizens' a credible vision of what it could be to call oneself a European. That, in my opinion, means unified taxation, laws and benefits and a military for starters and pretty much the end of the nation states.

Are you seriously telling me you don't know what the human brain project is? O.o

When last did you read the science news?

The human brain project is a huge science project lead by the European Union which aims to build an authentic artificial replica of the human brain in order to better understand how it works. The European Union has dedicated 1 billion euros to the project as of yet, and although not as big as the human genome project, it could be a very big milestone for humanity when it is completed. It is seen as the human genome project 2.0 in the biological sciences, like a sequel to an existing blockbuster movie. Dozens if not hundreds of smaller science projects across Europe are going to be loosely aimed at achieving the necessary knowledge to fully build this working model.

To my knowledge it is not an artificial intelligence project primarily before you comment anything in that direction, but big advances on the brain simulation in general will likely result in great advances in artificial intelligence as well.
