The judgment of what is good and bad behaviour is based on what benefits or harms the social unit (family, clan, tribe) and therefore adds to or detracts from long-term survival.

Quite neatly. We humans have many ways to express social solidarity; every culture has its formal and informal conventions - hand-holding is one that has been part of the conventions of many cultures for a very long time - probably because it's a convenient and versatile means of non-verbal communication. When members of a clan stand in a circle, holding hands, whether in mourning or celebration, supplication or dance or a merely a game of ring-around-the-rose, they are sharing in a common mood and offering mutual support.
