Always love this one. Surely you mean against the unwise unarmed schmuck? As if they were armed it'd probably be to late for you.henry quirk wrote:...

It is improper to shoot anybody, even an intruder, unless in self-defense.

"if they were armed it'd probably be to late for you"
Specious reasoning based on next to no information.
My doors are locked; my windows are locked; my coach gun (which I'm well-trained in the use of) is next to my bed; I sleep lightly.
Do the math.
I expect I have a better than average chance of gettin' him or them before he or they get me.
A certainty: if I'm unarmed and he or they come in, I'm toast.
I'll take my chances 'with' the coach gun (no matter how slim 'you' may think those chances are), *if you don't mind.
*or, even if you do mind...

Fair do's. If I lived in a nation with 270,000,000 guns I'd probably arm myself as well.
I assume you have no kids as that situation sounds fraught with accident potential.
Still, I sleep without this concern and it's mainly due to knowing that the nutters still pretty much can't get guns over here. Although this appears to be changing.

"I assume you have no kids"
Got a rambunctious seven year old: he's knows damned well what guns are for, how dangerous they can be, and he keeps his hands 'off' ('cept when I’m with him).
Almost always: when you read about some gun tragedy, said tragedy is born of ignorance...ignorance on the part of parent (who makes no effort to safeguard by way of education) and ignorance on the part of the kid (kept unschooled and left vulnerable to untempered curiosity).

If I know anything at all, I know that Henry's nephew knows what a gun is and what it does. People who grow up around guns as a part of their lives learn the reality of firearms. It's the people who are sheltered from guns and are afraid of them that are the problem. A gun is a tool that preforms a function, nothing more, nothing less, a gun has no intention of it's own. Banning guns and claiming that they are the problem will do no good, you may as well ban crowbars, what do you think, Henry.

Actually, the figure is 300,000,000, and the only reason that figure is so low is due to government oppression, albeit not as rampant as in England.Arising_uk wrote:If I lived in a nation with 270,000,000 guns I'd probably arm myself as well.

Good luck to you. Not sure what the average citizen is like in your country but I'm happy not to have them armed in mine and the stats appear to back me up.

Unfortunately, you are laboring under a delusion. I've got a great idea for you: campaign for England to enact a maximum speed limit of 15 miles per hour and your automobile fatalities will be reduced to almost zero.Arising_uk wrote:Good luck to you. No delusion. I have a much lower chance than bob of dying from a gun. I also have a much lower chance of dying from a road accident so I see no need to change our speed limits. Given in 2011 1700 odd people in the UK died in automobile accidents as a percentage of the driving population the fatalities are near as dammit zero.bobevenson wrote:Unfortunately, you are laboring under a delusion. You should have added, "I also have a much lower chance of getting a life."Arising_uk wrote: I have a much lower chance than bob of dying from a gun. I also have a much lower chance of dying from a road accident.

In America, a crust is the end of a loaf of bread, and that's something I should be asking the masses of socialist Europe.Arising_uk wrote:Bob never has answered the question, "What is it you do to earn a crust in life bob?".bobevenson wrote:You should have added, "I also have a much lower chance of getting a life."

The problem with guns in America is the assholes that believe guns ARE'nt part of the poblem.
Get out of the stone age please and drop the self reighteous bullshit you cling on to.
Take a leaf out of Australia's book.. They cleaned up their gun laws after a major massacre, got a nationwide gun return program going, outlawed automatic weapons and many other types of weapons, made it harder for people to obtain them etc etc.
Guess what happened people???? Gun crime went down enourmously!
The USA an their gun laws. Get over yourselves.
