There have been plenty of smart humans, who were perfectly willing to tell their fellow men how to do things better, make things better, treat one another better. They are writing articles and books and making movies, and sometimes running for public office.
In the best case, people nod and say, that's a smart guy, and then keep doing what they're doing. In the worst case, of course, they crucify him and then blame their brutal, repressive, hateful religion on him.
You can show people the way, but they can't seem to stay on it. I suppose they have to find their own.
I've just been reading Kurt Vonnegut's book of essays, called "Fates Worse Than Death." He saw it all, knew it all, said it very well - and amusingly. I recommend that book for perspective.
Well if you won't do it , your leaving the door open for me , and I'm clearly unhinged ,
so it would be saving society from being inflicted with the likes of me ,
surely you would do the job better , I'm too lazy to even learn how to type ,
so you better save the planet from me ,,!!!

Re: No Missing Link
I think we need to change what motivates people. People often worship god out of fear. People often do the right thing out of fear. Fear of going to hell, being punished, and/or being deprived of pleasure. People often expect to be rewarded for worshiping god and be rewarded for doing the right thing. We should want to do the "right" things because it is simply the right way to do things. You should not expect to be rewarded for what you do. Do it for the greater good?
Re: No Missing Link
During our childhood, we are vulnerable, because we are mentally developing. We lacked the full abilities and experience to make the right decisions. So most religions are there to provide some sort of discipline that is easy to understand based upon the simple thoughts of a child, until they are mentally mature enough to find other reasons to do things.

Yes, I understand! But in truth there is no necessary accounting for belief or what one says they know, such that convincing one, that has believed all their life, that praying to god, and doing the 'right' thing, shall allow them to live forever in heaven, it a monumental task, if possible at all. And if ignorance is in fact bliss, and in fact they are, why then would one want to take that away from them?Godfree wrote:I would like to be able to ,SpheresOfBalance wrote:People want to live forever, don't you? So how dare the righteous religious brainwash their children before they are old enough to understand the ,Osric wrote:During our childhood, we are vulnerable, because we are mentally developing. irrational nonsense being fed to them ,
just when our children are at their most vulnerable ,
parents force this garbage on to them , in some cases warping their minds forever ,
to be fair , impartial , non prejudice ,
shouldn't we let the child decide for themselves WHEN they are old enough to do so ,
if we have already filled their little heads with the madness of christianity ,
it's often too late , their minds are already lost in the fantasy ,
surely a secular democratic society should let the children decide for themselves ,,,????

Re: No Missing Link
"They did have it for centuries - especially the 15th, 16th and 20th. Nobody won, so they're having more of it. The thing about that battle, though: it's not over facts. It's about power. Whatever evidence you show to somebody who wants to stay in control that they're incompetent, they won't accept it. A drunk won't refrain from driving; a senile surgeon won't stop operating; a mad king won't abdicate; a CEO who has lost $millions won't step down; a general whose tanks are floundering in mud won't order retreat. Popes, ayatollahs, chief rabbis and millionaire televangelists are not going to give up leading masses of people around by rings through their frontal lobes - nor all the pomp and toadies, costumes, photo sessions and speechifying, bullet-proof limos, fawning heads of state, choir-boys and other tasty morsels that go with being boss.
The only way religion will ever lose its hold is through people's common sense. But that means relinquishing the dreams of heaven, the hope of a nice life somewhere else after a miserable one on earth... We could achieve that by giving everyone a nice life on earth (We could, but won't.) What we cannot do is talk people out of the delusion of exclusive righteousness that religions confer on their believers. "
A brilliant rant.
Every so often one comes across a like mind of great power.
i just did

"and while I'm at it a bigger dick ,"
[ i laughed so much i got a headache]
the secret story of thr knife fight is coming. i still only remember flashes
[yes a true story]
I never till now put them together as this was a seedy time for me,, drugs and booze.
Enemy at the gate is of course the film
and its lesson about war.
Enemy at the Gates
“I've been such a fool, Vassili. Man will always be a man. There is no new man.
We tried so hard to create a society that was equal, where there'd be nothing to envy your neighbor.
But there's always something to envy.
A smile, a friendship, something you don't have and want to appropriate.
In this world, even a Soviet one, there will always be rich and poor. Rich in gifts, poor in gifts. Rich in love, poor in love.”
what is amazing is the USSR at time was an even more oppressive state than the REICH.
preconditioning is a powerfull thing.
Every day i thank 'whats his name' that i was born in age of near reason. in a quiet part of earth

I have a suggestion Hjar ,
you tend to waffle , meander off on a random subject that seldom seems to engage the subject ,
try short concise punchy points ,ie ,
I would like a bigger dick , I'm average for someone who shall we say lives in the CONGO ,
but we always want more ,the question then is ,
does wanting it make it real ,,???
just because there are a mountain of sheep bleeting that they want immortality ,
does that make it real ,,???
people want to believe Aliens have visited Earth , nonsense , wishful thinking ,
people want to believe there is a god , rubbish , brainless fools ,
TRY WANTING TO KNOW THE TRUTH , REALITY, TRY WANTING THAT

Re: No Missing Link
Any person who can think rationally can see the absurdities of most religions. You don't even need scientific proof. Fortunately science clears a lot of misconceptions like the creation theory that talks about first parents in the garden of Eden and its literal understanding.
Life and the universe is a mystery. Why don't we live the mystery instead of getting carried away by what religions say. Also everything in nature follows its nature i.e. it's innate tendencies and instincts. We human beings need to follow our innate nature i.e. our tendencies to compassion, social living, rational thinking, imagination etc. Why do we need religion to tell us what to do?

"how do we lose our religion"
how do we get governments to stop funding the madness ,
that would be a good start , if they couldn't get funding , survival of the fittest would become real ,
but because governments fund religion and mine anyway refuses to fund Atheism ,
religion is artificially propped up , a bit like saving a bank thats gone bankcrupt ,
in the real world religion should have died a miserable death centuries ago ,
it's only because governments fund it that it is kept going ,
laws are past to protect and ensure the survival of religion ,
and all the while they are refusing to fund Atheism , and ,, claim to be secular ,
somethings not right there , we can't be both secular and funding religion , thats corrupt ,
and of course america is , and thats the problem , religion is in control ...
