Prior to the "Arab Spring", the dictators in the Middle East protected their Christian minorities. We now see not the dictatorship of totalitarianism, but of "democracy".

Some dictators protect some minorities - usually while persecuting another minority.
It is a very long way from democracy. One dictator replaced by another and another, until some kind of resolution or stability is achieved. That could take years or decades, depending on how the rich and powerful nations respond, and whether any sane, capable administrators gain power.

Religious minorities tend to have a hard time, whenever there is an upheaval - and always, when the clergy uses its influence over the people to gain political power. Nobody did very much for Jews fleeing Germany, or Muslims forced out of Israel or Hindus displaced from Uganda, or Kurds escaping Iraq. The Vatican doesn't squander its financial resources, nor its influence, on refugees.

This happens, as long as humans go on being crazy.
