Along those same lines...

Our intellect functions in a clear defined way;
yes/no, up/down, black/white, positive/negative...either/or.

We live in a multidimensional continuum.

Meaning that intellectually, if there is a black there must also exist an opposite...white, and ALL the shades of grey in-between.

So, ANY thing that we can state as true must also, by definition, in another framework, be equally false.

If we try hard enough, we could make the argument that up is down...black is white...etc.

Actually the person that made this gif blew it, as his negative is not a gray-scale negative, but rather a color negative.

 I wasn't talking about Bills 'pass the bong' concept. I was talking about your assertion that the specifics of a concept don't matter in philosophy. Wrong, as I said, you assume that his concept is complete, pay attention! Over your head again, or just being contrary? Anyone that thinks themselves a philosopher that is in fact bound by what they've been taught, forever lives in the past, never being capable of sensing the potential originality, contained within their future, they're simply a parrot of the past.

Better to help someone with your education, than to attempt to use it as a weapon, as you might just be shooting blanks.

 ... How long has philosophy been in the "works" anyway? ...
About 2000 odd years and in that time its come to many conclusions and decisions about whats meaningless and pointless to talk about, Bill's 'concept' is one of them.
Wrong, to say this, assumes that philosophy could possibly know of all things to come, not true, only a fool would say this. Many things are on the horizon that philosophy has never considered.
I see the possibility of more, contained in a chemical, than man is currently able to see, especially on the quantum level. Such that both sides are full of conjecture. So what's the truth? Flip a coin.
I hear more metaphysical nonsense with respect to physics and chemistry and especially with respect to philosophy. You can pretty much always tell when the words "quantum level" appear.
No, that's just what scares you, as it's the frontier of possibility/probability, that so far, has not been accounted for. You like things to be as concrete as you believe them to be, or else you feel lost, but I say one is lost in the concrete of things as they are usually too rigid to sense the change of truth coming their way.
Was not life on planet earth an arbitrary starting point. You forget to look at the accepted conventional truth of things. Hydrogen was the first chemical element, is that an arbitrary starting point, it was the first of something new, never seen before. Is it not true that life on planet earth started as chemical soup.
That and comets and asteroids but what does this have to do with the idea that hydrogen 'thinks'?
The first element was hydrogen, not 'comets and asteroids,' as they are made of what hydrogen bred, via stars, the breeder reactors of the universe.

"The first element produced was hydrogen, along with traces of helium and lithium."
"big bang" --Wikipedia--

You assume that consciousness came from nothing, just because you can't see the universe thinking, doesn't mean it doesn't, to me it stands to reason that a thinking organism was born of thinking, what ever level that may be on. Relative size may preclude our vision of such things, as surely we've already seen this to be true, which does not mean there are no such things.

Bills 'concept' abuses the term 'thinking' and he, and you I guess, want such ideas as you wish to have some greater purpose for 'life'.
No, you believe Bills concept, abuses the thinking of those you've parroted, when was that anyway, do you keep up with current events, as to their beliefs today? Which says nothing, necessarily, with regard to the truth of the universe.

Not a greater purpose, just the truth, what ever that may happen to be. Unlike you, I'm a true agnostic as I understand that no man knows the truth, i.e., intelligent creation, or random arbitrary chance. How could you possibly know that our consciousness wasn't born of some, yet to be seen by man, force, that could be said to think, on whatever level? You would have everyone believe that just because man is unaware of something, it cannot possibly exist. That's just ridiculous.

The start of any great idea, of the unknown, requires a leap of faith, hopefully with facts, to soon follow. How much effort do you put into something before you give up?

The problem I see in talking of things so long ago, is that one cannot possibly know, with certainty. Sure some 'guess's' are more informed than others, but that does not necessarily bear on their accuracy.
And most guesses of this sort shouldn't even be entertained as having any meaning, philosophically that is.
This is of the same 'sort' that has brought us all the knowledge that we have. You're particular belief doesn't necessarily say anything of any importance to the possibility.

Nice when toking the bong but nonsense per se.
Just a ruse to attribute demeaning connotation, a falsehood if there ever was one. I could name the great people throughout history that have attributed mind altering substances to their breakthroughs in knowledge. But since it doesn't fit you limited parroting, it would be wasted on you. Have you ever had an original thought?
The reason you tend to fail is that you are too locked into your parroted belief system, which assumes that everything that you've been taught, is necessarily correct, with certainty, which lends no necessary truth, as to the actual state of the universe. Your view is to stay rigid to your programming, which is common for those that seek to rectify their low self esteem, via the parroting of, so called, authorities of higher learning, as they display a little piece of paper as proof. Though it shall get you by, in a crowd that buys into the same belief, but not necessarily closer to any particular real truth. I see that your education would be far better spent on entertaining possibility, as that's the only place you'll find your first original thought.
