This article on Søren Kierkegaard's three forms of life was published in Summer 1999, in Issue 24 of Philosophy Now. It was in the subscriber-only section of the Philosophy Now website but we've just unlocked it and made it generally accessible to all in celebration of Kierkegaard's 200th birthday, which is today! Happy Birthday, Søren!

The phrase leap of faith is normally connected to Kierkegaard, however he referred to a leap as a leap to faith.

He thought that this "leap" was vital concerning Christianity due to the paradoxes that exist in it.

It is necessary if a person decides to believe in a God and a man that existed as both, that person would have to make a leap of faith to believe in its validity.

and he did.

One thing I have noticed about philosophy is that there are basically two kinds of philosophers, those who cater to personal needs and those who cater to system needs. Kierkegaard caters to personal needs, like Nietzsche and many 20th century philosophers. Personal need philosophers ask questions like Who or What am I. Systems philosophers, like Locke, Hegel, Marx, are more interested in how the system of humanity works. Many philosophers straddled both worlds.

The ancient Greek philosophers were basically system philosophers. Most of this forum is about personal needs rather than looking at the bigger picture.
