What's a universe?
The universe started out as something ever so teeny which after all this time is as big as it is. The best guess is that it is a ‘field’ of some sort and the only thing we can say for certain is that it has a remarkable capacity for expansion. There is no evidence that at any point, God or anyone else added any condiments or spices, the field is all there is.
We ‘know’ that stuff is made of particles, they in turn are made of the field hence they too have a remarkable capacity for expansion. So why isn’t everything getting bigger? Well the universe of course is, but in the maelstrom of it’s early stages it turns out that some of the eddies and vortices got tangled up in knots and formed matter. The matter doesn’t get any bigger, because the knot doesn’t, but the field associated with it is part of the universe which is still ‘exploding’.
The knots clatter about making waves in the field, particular events being associated with their own wave. For instance; forcing a tangle of knots like a proton into a tangle like a nucleus will take such and such a kick creating a so and so wave, or gluon as some people like to call them.
Rather than being warped, as Einstein suggested, the field is condensed wherever there is a bunch of knots, matter, and rarefied where there isn’t. Hence waves and particles passing matter are refracted. Since particles are two or more knots tumbling over each other they are doubly refracted; as a knot goes one way it is refracted by the field, as it swings around it’s partner and goes the other way it is still refracted by the field, so the particle feels a force towards the matter that is the source of the condensed field, which is gravity. Mass, rather than being the degree to which an object warps spacetime, is how much field it puts out increasing the local density.

Re: What's a universe?
A bottle.
In the bottle were laws.
ergo
'spacetime"?
Oh, it was in bottle.
Im out on a limb here. but.
A universe is sum total of mass within it.
Time and space are defined by that mass for gravity.. The great unknown.. defines.
What really pisses me off is that in 50 years.. 2 people i have met in real life have any understanding of what this is about.
Royally pissed off at society and its total lack of education.
sorry

Society isn't completely to blame, religion has played a big part in this willful ignorance. Bill Nye (I'm not an especially big fan of his but he does get some things right) was Boo'ed off the stage once while giving a talk on astronomy in the American Bible belt, for stating that the moon reflected the light of the Sun. Audience members were saying that The Bible says that God created the 'Greater Light' and the 'Lessor Light' and a Light shines by it's own light. It says so in the Bible.

Doc.. this does surprise me in the least.
the old saying.
"when you think you have hit rock bottom.. someone throws you a shovel."
that is the depth of human self inflicted ignorance.
I swear.. humanity will split.
The educated will have a hard choice. very hard.
i say take the children.

A couple Sundays ago we had a guest pianist, and after the service she played a piece that I recognized, so I caught my grandson and said "Do you hear what she is playing?" He listened for a measure or so and his eyes lit up and he said "Thats what you play." It was the Bach piano prelude #1, Even though he didn't know the title he recognized it, I like to think that I'm giveing my children and grandchildren as much education as I can.

Try this,
http://www.bobbarrypiano.com/
Click on Discography and at the bottom of the page will be titles that will play samples of the piece.
Listen to "My Little Girl".

i love you doc.. always a best friend come thick or thin...
And you like ships. hehe
Btw those italian heavy cruisers came on Uk convoy to malta. Screened by 2 Cl's and 3 DD's.
Convoy sunk. but 2 zara class need repairs.. this is how complex the game is.
2 months off line.. the air assets have to take up slack.
New Italian army at tobruk crosses line. 6 mobile divisions. 8 inf.
The brits will pray at nelsons column.
For a miracle.
they will need one.
Re: What's a universe?
The question is not "What" but "Why." Why not "What"? The Universe is everything - hence "nothing": (

Re: What's a universe?
'Why?' is a perfectly reasonable question if you are doing philosophy, but I wouldn't bother asking a physicist. In fact you are liable to get some pretty odd looks if you ask 'What is the universe made of?' It's the oldest question in philosophy, but not something that many physicists take seriously. It's metaphysical, it goes beyond the business of science which is to understand what happens; how to predict and manipulate the universe. Newton wasn't the first to ignore metaphysics, but having described the action of gravity, he admitted that he had no idea what caused it and by adding 'hypotheses non fingo' basically said he didn't care. Much the same attitude was adopted by Niels Bohr; the Copenhagen Interpretation is also known as 'Shut up and calculate'.Cerveny wrote:The question is not "What" but "Why." Why not "What"? In fairness, it doesn't make any difference if you think gravity is caused by the warping of spacetime, an exchange of 'gravitons' or angels pushing things together, Newton's inverse square law describes what happens pretty well, Einstein's field equations even better.
The question really is 'Is the universe actually made of anything?' If so, we know some of it's properties.
Re: What's a universe?
Thinking about universes just brought up this thought that a universe has to have an outer rim.
It has an outer shell that can be recognized by his outer materia rims
which were the first and fastest particles that escaped the big bang situation.
But if this is the given model: big bang - expansion - entropy,
then universe itself is an entity that grows by sending the message
"WE ARE ONE" which would be the smallest existent common denominator
an entity can provide when reaching out for other entities to overcome
the absolute loneliness of the "I EXIST" sensed within the total singularity moment
which instantly canges into an "I EXPAND" when realized that beyond the "I"
there is always a possibility of a "SOMETHING ELSE BUT ME" which usually is
translated by universe entities as a "NOTEXISTENCE" because NOTEXISTENCE
is the only thing an existing universe cannot achieve.
But on an integrated level "DEATH" equals the notexisting phenomenon of NOTEXISTENCE
whichis located OUTSIDE of each universe to establish a huge gravity well which attracts
by teasing CURIOUSITY, which is the main motivator for growth. Therefore there cannot
be such an event as "DEATH" within any given real universe. The universal principle is additive ...
even a substraction can be seen as an addition of negativity as far as i know.

Well I see that we do share something in common, that being an appreciation for the playing ability of Michael Hedges. May he RIP. Another example of an awesome musical talent, that died way too soon.Hjarloprillar wrote:Bach
