This should settle some arguments.
World's happiest and saddest countries, where do you live?
1. Norway
Enjoying the harborside in Bergen, Norway. The Scandinavian nation ranked 1st overall on the 2012 Legatum Institute Prosperity Index. It also ranked 1st in Social Capital and 2nd in Economy.
4. Australia
Australia ranked 4th overall this year, 2nd in education and 3rd in personal freedom.
12. United States
San Francisco. After three years in 10th place. The U.S.A. has slipped to 12th overall. The land of the free ranks only 14th in Personal Freedom but 2nd in Health.
13. United Kingdom
London. The United Kingdom ranks 6th in Entrepreneurship and Opportunity and 7th in Governance.

sorry but the law of the conservation of energy declares one does not cease to exist when they die, they just change energy form.Arising_uk wrote:What topic?
There is no possibility about it.
You will die and you will cease to exist.

Nothing to be sorry about but why bother with 'energy' why not just Lavoisier's mass? Either way it still won't be 'you' as 'you' will have ceased to exist and be dead as it won't be the same energy form.james1951 wrote:sorry but the law of the conservation of energy declares one does not cease to exist when they die, they just change energy form.

No, I heard of all of those expressions.
But I did not know P*$$** meant pissed.
I believe most serious philosophers or individuals who do some serious reflecting would agree that we never experience death.
We never experience an end.
It's impossible not to exist.

Kind of tricky here... wording is important;
I believe most serious philosophers or individuals who do some serious reflecting would agree that we never experience death.
We are consciousness. Consciousness does not end...

Unless of course you can point me towards a disembodied consciousness?

You wouldn't I guess have thought it possible to exist when you didn't exist (before you were born) so why think it possible to not exist whilst you do exist? Makes sense to me

Because I couldn't have thought it possible to exist before I did and seems nonsense to me to think that I'll be existing in this way after I don't. Will something be existing after I don't? Yup! the world but it won't be the same one that did when I did. Do I like the thought, not much but I also see that all appear to not exist after they die so it appears a reasonable possibility that this applies to me as well.Bernard wrote:You wouldn't I guess have thought it possible to exist when you didn't exist (before you were born) so why think it possible to not exist whilst you do exist? Physical bodies die. That's not the question.
There is an old philosophical train of objectives that encompasses these statements:
We are not our bodies.
We are not out thoughts.
We are not our emotions.
The reality is consciousness passes through our bodies, our thoughts, our emotions.
Consciousness exists.
We are but the point where the pencil meets the paper.

To me you make a mockery of being a consciousness
So you are right there is no 'we' to not be our bodies, thoughts and emotions as being a body in an external world with thoughts and emotions is us and when the body goes so do we.
Although there is a nice metaphysical Digital Physics and Philosophy by Fredkin that I like to agree with every now and then as it fits the times but on the whole I prefer Analytic Phenomenology as the hope for 'Western' Philosophy. Especially in the face of the apparent re-rise of the mish-mash that is the New Age 'Eastern' mysticism that your posts appear to display.
Your pencil analogy hints at a holder and reflects, I think, your loss of a theist faith.

I'm not sure what you said...but I defend your right to say it.
I think you are attempting to change the course of your dialog here upon the forum.
I support that.
Good post.

Re: ~ What if it were possible to die? ~
Your backhand at Eastern mysticism via new age in the post to Bill says it all in regard a typical myopic philosophy whose prevalence is quickly waning. Its a philosophy that aligns itself to rationality as would a Bishop tag behind a Pope. Eastern Philosophy rips on Western and that people gravitate toward its ancient grove with respect and awe is testament to its power and continuing relevance.Arising_uk wrote:Do I like the thought, not much but I also see that all appear to not exist after they die so it appears a reasonable possibility that this applies to me as well.
What your philosophy doesn't account for is that nothing is nothing and that nothing can become nothing. Being doesn't cease and become not-being, it may cease a way or form of being, or cease to be differentiated being, but being doesn't cease. I think that's Bill's point.
The mysteries of life will always trump its rationales sir.
