Sorry, gun-related crime has been decreasing steadily in the U.S. over the past twenty years per FBI statistics. The Voice of Time wrote:What the fuck? You could write a book on how to lie with statistics!
If there were 1000 firearms pr. citizen in the US and 0.01% deaths pr. citizen then it doesn't matter if there were comparatively fewer pr. firearm (which would be likely in this extreme example) when the amount of deaths could be multiple times that of any other country!
You're acting as if guns are people, as if we what really matters is the guiltiness of each individual gun and not the amount of death they cause on total average!

Re: Connecticut School Massacre - pass the ammunition
Guns are a greater evil than good and will always be when they are freely available. However, if you are gonna ban guns then you'll have to ban them on as many levels as possible and keep tight restrictions on their availability for all, also, you need a highly developed democracy that takes care of its citizen (a strong welfare state) as people do take to violence first of all because of forms of desperation, and a strong democracy with combined welfare state ensures that a) people can get their desperations expressed and heard, and b) their desperations can be dealth with positively for the individual, they can get help to deal with problems of either medical, economical or social nature, whereas these problems would otherwise had been supressed in a c) weakly or non-existing democracy, and d) because of a scarcity of human as well as material resources to aid desperate situations they would either be held in a situation of despair or pushed further down, creating a form of dystopia.reasonvemotion wrote:BAN GUNS
You can't have policemen with guns if ordinary citizens are not allowed ones, that doesn't sound very safe, you'll just get a situation of "I have a bigger penis than you, are you gonna try anything stupid?" (with the exception of special police forces: in the case of extreme situations, as those, if not often, sooner or later will happen and needs forces capable of dealing with them)
Even with all their available weaponry, the citizens of the US would never get close to match the firepower of the authorities of the US state apparatus, and that counts for every high-developed country. To believe that guns make less abuse by government is there no reason to believe in anything but perhaps the short-term (that is, for selective individual cases). You don't make a better world by constantly threatening people, all you do is make people paranoid and anxious to get rid of each other in one way or the other.

Saw an interesting story last night. Perhaps you've heard of 3D printing.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/3D_printing
Data about a 3D object is stored in a computer file. You can print a 3D object from a the data in in this file, if you have a 3D printer.
3D printing will have many uses, and one of them appears to be home manufacture of guns. You print out the parts on your 3D printer, snap them together, and you've got yourself a plastic gun. The story I saw seemed to be saying we aren't quite there yet, but will be shortly.
It seems before long anybody will be able to make any kind of weapon at home, assuming they can get the data files for whatever weapon they want to print.
Imho, this points to a larger and more important issue. Everybody is being empowered by technological developments, including bad guys and insane people.
If nothing is done to address the source of the problem, men, and everybody is made ever more powerful....
It seems to follow that the death tolls in these kind of events is going to rise.

Are you kidding? The entire U.S. armed forces couldn't stand up to 300 million small arms held by our civilian population. Of course, the citizens of Norway aren't in a position to do anything against a despotic government except shake their fists, and then only until they're thrown in the slammer! The Voice of Time wrote:Even with all their available weaponry, the citizens of the US would never get close to match the firepower of the authorities of the US state apparatus

The air-fleet alone could do that.bobevenson wrote:The entire U.S. armed forces couldn't stand up to 300 million small arms held by our civilian population.
Besides, in Norway the army would probably mutinate if somebody tried to seize government.

Docile Norway citizens could never stand up to your socialistic government no matter how oppressive it becomes. Good luck shaking your fists, my friend. The Voice of Time wrote:The air-fleet alone could do that.bobevenson wrote:The entire U.S. armed forces couldn't stand up to 300 million small arms held by our civilian population.

Thomas Sowell is a well known economist and public intellectual.
Chaz ought to read some of his work, starting with his statements about UK gun control in this column:

Thanks for providing a link to Thomas Sowell's excellent column. I think the following excerpt says it all:tbieter wrote:Thomas Sowell is a well known economist and public intellectual.

"The key fallacy of so-called gun control laws is that such laws do not in fact control guns. They simply disarm law-abiding citizens, while people bent on violence find firearms readily available."

After all the shouting has nearly gone away, the U S of A are just about on track again. Phew.... that was close. Settle down all you gun lovers. No one is going to change a thing.

That's about how serious the government is about the whole deal. Wait and see. "You heard it first here on this Forum".

That's too bad, I was hoping other countries would revoke their improper laws that prevent law-abiding citizens from owning guns.reasonvemotion wrote:No one is going to change a thing.

America must be an exceedingly dangerous country to live in.
