It's the degree of nationalism that draws my attention. Nationalism itself could be me cheering for my local football team, or Hitler frothing at the mouth in Nuremberg.

It is my view that they are both identical; a primitive emotion of tribalism, irrational, dangerous, useful.
Such emotions are immanent, ready to be mobilised to send boys to their deaths at a moment's notice.

i think cheering for a sports team is harmless. sometimes i've even viewed sports as being an alternative to actual war, because its a diversion from it. back in the day, those human energies were focused on actual bloody killing. i think modern sport is actually helpful and positive. (i'm not using parody or being ironic when i'm saying this)(i'll note from now on when i am to avoid any possible confusion).

in fact, a good portion of my life is spent around various teams of sport and i find myself hoping they win. however, when i just thought of that, i realized that i am unintentionally rooting for the teams going against my hometown . i want my hometown to win too. i don't think about sports much, if at all, so if i were at an actual sports match, i would be in the bleachers going 'hey! good job team member of the Stallions! and then if the opposing team made a point i would also say, 'hey good job team member of the Bears!' (pathetic i know)

so no, i don't find sports in any way comparable, connected or tied to something as serious as Hitler frothing at the mouth.

I don't think flag waving, is okay, be it for a football team, a religion or the queen. In ancient Pompeii, the teams were red, blue, green etc.. they did not reflect a town or a place, or ideology, They were pure cult. The after match violence would put the worst Euro-violence to shame. We are talking about murder and rioting. What were they all routing for? A colour??? Really? And that's all it takes.
It's not about the tea, the match, or the playing, its something hideous that lies beneath the human psyche. Deep tribal feelings of belonging. Incipient feelings to destroy all those that stand in your way.
Why do you care about your 'hometown' is does not matter.
None of this is harmless
