Keeping An Open Mind
Keeping An Open Mind
Truly critical thinking is rare. The "herd mentality" on the left is universal on Free Speech TV, https://www.freespeech.org/ which I watch each morning, and on the right on Fox News, http://www.foxnews.com/ which I watch the rest of the day.
Maddow's counterpart on the right is Sean Hannity. http://www.foxnews.com/on-air/hannity/index.html He is the robo-pundit on the right. Hannity is politics; at least Rush plays golf and can talk NFL football. Hannity is all right-wing politics.
"A few moments later, Gillespie and Maddow squared off, with Gillespie intimating that Maddow could barely consider a position that wasn't in line with her left wing politics. An offended Maddow blurted, "You don't know me, you don't know me." Gillespie did not retreat but jabbed -- well, if you really are open-minded -- not a Democrat straight down the line -- tell me one Republican perspective on an issue you agree with. Maddow, who looked to be thinking, was silent..."

Re: Keeping An Open Mind
Why should open-mindedness mean you agree with something? Open-minded just means you take time to go through things largely without pushing other things away. Everybody pushes something, but an open-minded person, relative to his world (be it the US, the UK, Norway, Russia or Iran) is open-minded when he is significantly more taking things into account that is by others pushed away, refuted immediately, or otherwise not given a proper position to be evaluated.
That there ever existed a person which was anything close to this thing called "Absolute Open-Mindedness" is a myth, a legend, which cannot be true, because regardless of any choice a person makes he has to refute something else, whether it is in South-Africa and him/she in the UK, or whether it is right in front of the person, or even on the other side of the galaxy, the person cannot take all things into account (which the person could theoretically allocate time for). So it's a word used in relativity with a common held pattern about a given group of people's choices of taking things into account, giving things time to have all their relevance found and analysed/thought through for choices to be made. If an individual in this group of people does not follow this pattern but is being overall more positive along the given pattern attached to this group he is open-minded in that relation.

that reminded me of a book i read once written by an American journalist who is not anti-American about a Columbian village called 'Gaviotas, A Village To Change The World'.Why should open-mindedness mean you agree with something? Open-minded just means you take time to go through things largely without pushing other things away. those who created and live in this village seem to keep an open mind in this sense and when asked by some why he hasn't tried to supplant his ideas and make this happen elsewhere it's founder said something to the effect of (paraphrasing) 'what we have here does not necessarily belong somewhere else' (paraphrasing) 'but is born of the intricate mixture of what it was born of in this place and that is why it works'.

heh, don't see the resemblance, but nice quote anyway! The relativity of the world is often misunderstood by those who hasn't themselves attained a personal life-world understanding of the implications. China works as it works because they are Chinese, Russia because they are Russians, Americans because they are Americans.
PS: I'm not necessarily a full relativist, I believe in universal rights and all that stuff, but relativism is a good measure for how well some one thing can work out when applied, and so give measure to how different things must coexist before they can exist in uniformity.

Keeping an open mind. I would say the majority here are of the opinion of one or two or more philosophers. Their opinions are most definitely locked into the mindset of their preferences and are quoted continually on this Forum. A safe bet every time, but not open minded, as I perceive it. Who can discount, successfully Plato, Socrates or Neitzsche's opinions. There is one exception John Gray. if I recall correctly.
and maybe only because of the poster, that effort went into proving him wrong.

The point of the question was that had she really been open-minded, then there was bound to be at least one point by the Republicans she would have agreed with. The Voice of Time wrote:Why should open-mindedness mean you agree with something? yes, and that's wrong. If the republicans sucks then they suck. Got nothing to do with open-mindedness. Same vice versa.ForgedinHell wrote:

Intellectual maturity is the process of closing your mind. You discover necessary and sufficient information and then rely upon it for building more complex understanding. Rinse and repeat.
