"G.W.F. Hegel in the nineteenth century declared that art would in future no longer be a predominant mode of expression for human beings. Danto seems to agree: Art has nothing left to do. It has run itself out, and has as its only project a philosophical one, the definition of art. And that would much better be left to the philosophers."

I disagree. As a constituent of reality, the thing that is beautiful art will give delight, joy, and pleasure to the observing normal human human being.

I agree with you here, Tom. Art is here to stay. Just as an endless succession of beautiful women will always turn heads, so will art. We can't help it...we are just drawn to it...no pun intended. :)

Think Art will sooner or later fall short in the face of science. But it is purely speculative futuristic talk, so no real argument.

Right now Art is more important than EVER. Designs are applications of art, and just think about all the fantazillions of web-pages that has been designed ^^ Think about all the pictures of artistic expression available, all the 3D modelling, all the films, all the music, all the dance. We live in a true golden age of Art, I actually dare say that where science can stop up and ask itself where it should go further: there will always be somebody who can express themselves in a new and refreshing way. Art in the present age seems to be a lucrative and profitable field of economy and an important part of all of our lives, whether we are artistic ourselves or not.

Ya know time...I just love the way you think! :D

I believe you are right...only science can stop art! You have me imagining a future where we finally find out what makes us tick....a future where we have come to the end of our "human" type knowledge and become bored...after all...the only real thing that keeps art alive is the magic...and when we figure out how the "trick" was done then we would not fall for her charms anymore...however...there is something to be said for science as an art form. So let's suppose we know what makes us tick...and can understand how to duplicate it...sort of like cloning on steroids. Suppose science becomes such that we could even make alternate universes..what I mean is we could start them...but maybe never see them develop as something might kill us..although....perhaps we have a way of storing all of our knowledge and memories which could then be implanted or divided and implanted in several of us if not armies of us...and by that I mean a single individual cloning himself a thousand times over so that he would be sure to be able to survive forever....or at least the chances of him doing so are increased.

Okay...so then in all eternity...our paintbrush would be science....and our art would be the universes we could create...after all...our universe is astounding...perhaps ...if a person did create it...in an infinite loop that I speak of...they were a very good artist?

Just imagining.... :D

Well, one of the reasons I can myself the Voice of Time is because at the depth of my own philosophy I find the fulfilment of everything expressed in the clock of the universe which at one point, like the clock ticking for your food, it will stop, and then the last music of life will ring eternally the same, or it won't, because with no further change there will be no'one to hear it. But that's my philosophy, in the end, there is nothing more than eternity, and when we find what makes us tick you can be certain there is a great step further to eternity for us all, because discover what makes us tick will ultimately mean there is nothing more which can possibly tick different, unless of course the discovery of the perfect tick of our sensations is the step to our own morphism and the escalating to a new level with new sensations to be discovered or new forms of life to take on... but as stated, it's all speculative futuristic talk ;)
