Advertising. What is it? What does it do?
Advertising. What is it? What does it do?
I found this and it rekindled thoughts on what exactly is advertising and should we accept it so passively.

It allows businesses to write off a lot of tax.

The purpose of advertising is to transform things you do not even want, into things you think you need.
It is the exhortation to exchange hard earned cash for useless items that you would do better to live without.
It feasts on eventual disappointment so as to offer the next useless item for purchase.

It transforms things, yes, but it also transforms people.

When I say 'transform' i said it with irony. The object themselves are not in any sense transformed, but yes, people's perceptions of the objects are transformed and thus people are transformedPluto wrote:It transforms things, yes, but it also transforms people.

Well, whatever communicates. It's pretty straight forward. Perhaps you could say it another way, but then you'd be paraphrasing, but hey, what's wrong in that, as long as you keep intact the core message.chaz wyman wrote:Pluto wrote:"The process of mental colonization by the commercial hologram is as pervasive within us as was the dogmatic influence of The Church within the psyches of Dark Age peasants".

Minds once held by the church are now held by a handful of commercial corporate entities.
Is there a link with the death of god and the rise of celebrity culture. Where's the book? These are the thoughts that may come out of such a problematic 'pseudo statement.'

It is a bit heavy I grant you. But then the author describes himself as part poet, so - what can you do or expect. How would you write it?

Tell me what he means by "commercial hologram" and why he chose that phrase.Pluto wrote:It is a bit heavy I grant you. But then the author describes himself as part poet, so - what can you do or expect. How would you write it?
As an historian I also hate the usage of "Bronze age" "Dark Age" which are meaningless outside of history.
Why can't he just say what he means?
He'd get more respect and more would read.
