I'm from the USA, where we don't live in caves and live off the land. So you don't like modern society. Invent a time machine and go back a few thousand years, my friend.

I know ....I know.....I know.....

The country with 5% of world population consuming 40% of world resources.

When America makes thousands of Nuclear Bombs it is progress, growth & development.......When an asian country makes nuclear bombs it is wrong......And when an Islamic country tries to make even one it is Terrorism.

The country which presented proof of Iraq having "Weapons of Mass Destruction" before attacking Iraq.

The country which boasted "We are going to smoke them out" before attacking Afghanistan ......and years later is now planning retreat and negotiating with the "Good Taliban".

The country which created Taliban and Al Qaeda.......gave them Weapons and Money for years......and which is now calling them Terrorist Organizations.

The country that threatens to attack a new country every day.

I know America......the entire world knows America.

The USA has many problems, but they pale compared to the rest of the world. The rest of the world can live in the Stone Age if they want, or emulate us. As far as nuclear weapons, India and Pakistan are the last countries who should have them!

You make a few fair points sushil_yadav but India appears to be going hell-for-leather for the same thing as America has promoted?

You are right.......India and China are trying to become as consumerist as America.

The title of my article is "Industrial Society Destroys Mind and Environment".......The term "Industrial Society" refers to all countries of the world .......all countries are industrialized [or trying to industrialize].......all countries are promoting consumerism.....trying to increase Growth Rate, Economy Rate, GDP.......thereby destroying the ecosystems moment by moment.

I'm an American, or at least I live there and as such there are those that label me as such. As far as I'm concerned I'm no such thing. As far as I'm concerned, I'm a human being, and that about wraps it up. The last good Americans were the Hopi, Anasazi, Cheyenne, etc. Damn those F**king Europeans. "Why move around the world, when Eden was so near." Yes my heritage is that of Europe, England to be exact. F**k the white man, and I'm quite white.

As far as your thoughts, sushil_yadav, I agree that we are f**ked. But I believe that we are capable of developing intellect and technology, while conserving nature, we just have to do it. As far as consumerism, materialism and thus capitalism being the wrong thing to give our lives meaning, again I agree. I see a world where everyone lives in the exact same adobe house, powered by the sun and wind, rides horses, or drives 100% electric cars, powered by the sun and wind, travels across oceans 'only' in ships, powered by the sun and wind. I see the petroleum solution as an evil solution, that may end up killing us all off, and for what, appeasing our desires of me, me, me, now, now, now.

Yes I do agree with a lot of what you said.

As far as the humans in space bit, I hope that never happens as what kind of ambassadors would we be? Ambassadors of destruction. No, if man can't curtail his lust for power and wealth, and properly balance his world, and thus himself, then I'd just as soon see him kill himself off, and never get the chance. I largely see us, currently, as a cancer!

Of course there's always hope that we'll change...

Free-market capitalism is the only proper political/economic system, and the USA comes closer than any other country to achieving it. It has led to the highest standard of living on Earth, and you naysayers can go straight to hell!

If the USA has come closer than any other country then why does it not have the highest standard of living on Earth?

Well at the moment I believe Norway (that country your ancestors left) is considered to have the highest standard of living in the world.

If you claim it's the USA then provide some evidence. I wouldn't bother checking GDP per capita if you think it all boils down to money though because the USA isn't top of that list either.

Norway??? The last thing I remember reading about Norway is when some guy washing his car was arrested for DUI. I don't recall too many people scrambling to get into that ultra-socialistic country.

Well apparently the "ultra-socialistic" Norwegians are happier and wealthier than the ultra-capitalist American's.

Is it consumerism? Man has always consumed and destroyed ecosystems, take what people call the unspoilt beauty of the moors in SW England, they are the result of earlier man not nature, as is much of the beauty of the English countryside as its the result of deforestation, early man destroyed the last of the big mammals in N. America, etc. Much of India itself I guess is the result of mans actions. Industrialization just makes the process larger I guess. Maybe its just hubris that makes us think we're not going to be like 99% of the species that have existed and at some time will become extinct and if we do then I guess life will just refill the 'gap' with something else.
