horses can be treated humanely or inhumanely
obviously it is wrong to treat horses inhumanely
horse-back riding is not inherently inhumane also unfortunately in many cases it is

No, but all cases of keeping horse would be considered slavery if the horse had the same rights as humans.Kayla wrote:incoherent questioninfo wrote:Is horse-back riding slavery?

In other words if you locked up a person at night, and rode on his back; and he was not free to leave - then that would be slavery.
Slavery and humane treatment are not necessarily connected. You are conflating two issues.
Some slaves are treated with love and care.
In Rome many slaves were richer and more powerful than their owners.

Good. It's nice to agree.info wrote:chaz, that was pretty much my cycle of thought too. So...
Thank you for saying so.

they are not necessarily connected in the strictly logical sensechaz wyman wrote: Slavery and humane treatment are not necessarily connected. You are conflating two issues.
in that there is no contradiction in imagining a slave owning society where all slaves are well treated
i thought slaves having major positions of power was more of the ottoman empire thing but maybe it happened in rome tooSome slaves are treated with love and care.

in any case in any slave owning society bad treatment of slaves is commonplace
so in actual world as it is as opposed to an imaginary world slavery and ill treatment of slaves have a strong connection
but slaves can be freed and freed slaves can do all the normal things that humans who are not slaves can do
but what would a "freed" horse do
there is no parallel here between freeing horses and freeing human slaves

In any wage/ employer relationship where there are not employment laws, exploitation and bad treatment of workers is also commonplace.
It is a tragic irony that after the US Civil war the freed salves standard of live immediately plummeted and many suffered starvation.
Before emancipation the slave owner regarded the slaves as an asset and protected that asset.
Immediately after emancipation the landless slaves became 'share croppers', each year the old owners would levy a tithe upon each household according to the harvest that was gathered, as well as a rent for accommodation. This enabled to old slavers to squeeze the blacks until the pips came out and many suffered for generations.
[and before anyone gets hysterical - this is a well documented fact that somehow as not entered the standard histories - can't think why!]
Black people are in some sense still waiting to become full members of society, despite King and Obama.

But not a necessary one. If you think I am bullshitting then take a look at tea-pickers in India, one of the fastest growing economies on earth.

Not in accordance with the evidence I'm afraid. RIghts are one thing opportunities are something completely different.
but what would a "freed" horse do
I would not wear a saddle, but would also not be fed. Without access to land it would die. And without access to land blacks in the south starved in their thousands.
Of course you can no longer blame anyone because no one is responsible for their welfare.

Except for the one's we have already identified.
