Re: Do we have the right to tax people in order to help the poor?
60 percent of Apple is owned by institutional holders. Concerning the institutional holders, millions of "less-than-rich" people across the globe have investments in these holding companies and are therefore owners of Apple Computer. What I don't get is why you chumps, who aren't on this g...

Re: Do we have the right to tax people in order to help the poor?
In the US the poor pay more tax then the rich. Plus there is a redistribution of wealth, from the poor and middle class to the rich! Dalek, perhaps this is the disconnect. Raw Thought said that the poor pay more tax than the rich. I was simply saying that the above is a false statement as evidenced...

Re: Do we have the right to tax people in order to help the poor?
I took "the rich" and "the poor," to mean "rich individuals" and "poor individuals." To follow up on your insertion of businesses: When you say "Apple Corp" I assume you are speaking of the computer company, not the corporation set up by the Beatles ...

Re: Do we have the right to tax people in order to help the poor?
From 2012 IRS tax data: The top five percent of income earners paid 58.9 percent of federal income taxes collected. The effective tax rate for the top 5 percent of income earners was 21 percent. The bottom 50 percent of income earners paid 2.8 percent of federal income taxes collected. The effective...

And vice versa?
Shame that our conversation had to degenerate like this. I was hoping for something more.

Ned,
As always, I appreciate your candor and commitment and feel that you do not deserve the expletives above. I do have a serious question: Are you ALF?

My list of conservative wackos served as counterpoint to your list of liberal wackos.

Re: Is jobs = wage slavery?
We would have to discuss books we both read on the subject, before anything else. John Kenneth Gabraith? Noam Chomsky? Naomi Klein? Linda McQuaig? Gwynne Dyer? John Ralston Saul? Richard Hofstadter? Radley Balko? Jonathan D. Simon? Jacque Fresco? Barbara Kingsolver? David Korten? John Casti? Rebecc...

And, I just noticed... we have gotten way off topic in this particular thread. My apologies. There are 3 threads I am participating in, and they all seem to be running together.

Re: Is jobs = wage slavery?
Someone will have to convince me of the so-called poverty that exists in the country I live in. Just Google "poverty in America" to start your research. I took your suggestion. I also googled "poverty in Africa"... good news is that in America, we don't really have a poverty pro...

Re: Is jobs = wage slavery?
Just establishing some things, Ned. You believe in private property rights. Now, beliefs concerning the topic at hand exist as a continuum. Very few people are at either end of the spectrum. For clarification, Peter Singer at one time made the claim that all of us in prosperous countries should give...

Re: Is jobs = wage slavery?
I can understand that debating economic systems via internet is typically pointless. I was disappointed by what I perceived as your proclamation that you possess the truth and that I don't. I had already typed the following before I read your last post, so I am going to send it anyway. It is not mea...

Re: Is jobs = wage slavery?
your misconception about Capitalism seems to be quite staggering (for me anyway). Comments like that work both ways and achieve absolutely nothing in the realm of philosophy. For example: Ned, your misconception about Capitalism seems to be quite staggering (for me anyway). Ned, your misconception ...

Re: Is jobs = wage slavery?
gary, you are indeed fortunate and I am happy for you. Many, unfortunately, are not as lucky. I could be wrong, but it was much more than luck... I do not claim to be 100% self-made, but hard work, effort, discipline, and responsibility certainly had something to do with it. I was very fortunate to...

Re: Is jobs = wage slavery?
Speaking of jobs and wage slavery: I must put forth effort to survive. This is the root of survival in the animal kingdom, and after all, I am nothing but another animal on this planet. For thousands of years, people eked out a living groveling in the dirt searching for shelter and something to eat....
