Re: Eliminative Materialism and Zombies
Is there anyone here who can adequately explain what Patricia Churchland means by "folk psychology"? I remember studying it in my philosophy of mind class but never really getting a sense of it being able to fully account for empirical phenomena. But perhaps I just misunderstood what &quo...

Re: Ex Machina
I noted at the end, that the AI, while seemingly full of wonder, lacked any fear or trepidation as to it's new circumstances of freedom. Just an observation. Hmm yes. That had not occurred to me. A good thought. I wondered why she would leave Caleb to die too, when he was clearly trying to help her...

Ex Machina
Any thoughts on this film? It's very well-made. And it raises some interesting questions about consciousness and A.I.

Well, thanks for enlightening me then.Melchior wrote:You don't have a clue what he is talking about.
You seem to prefer telling others they're wrong, rather than offering any interpretation of your own. It's discourteous.

Re: I would be interested to hear others thoughts on this quote from Nietzsche
The abyss is a good symbol for nihilism and despair. I think this is right. The "monster" you're fighting could be despair as well. Fighting against it is futile, you have to transcend it. Theists can transcend it through faith. Nietzsche would reject that idea, but say that it can be tra...

Re: God and love?
That is beautiful illustration Immanuel. Thank you for sharing that profound insight. One might learn more from a post like that than a whole library of self-help books. The difficulty, I think, is having the faith that God loves you. And not believing, as science and reason would have it, that we'r...

Re: God and love?
the Biblical order is quite the opposite. It says of God, "we love Him because He first loved us," and John writes, "if God so loved us, we ought to love one another." Agape as a human experience is derivative from the prior action of a loving God . The implication is that it is...

Re: God and love?
Kierkegaard did some important work on the understanding of Love. He didn't invent these terms, but helped to examine them in light of what he believed to be the various spheres of existence. Preferential Love (phileo) is the kind of brotherly love you feel for your friends, your family, and your ne...

Re: Do you want to live forever?
This is technically inaccurate since non existence and death are not the same thing Twain's intention was never philosophical rigor. It was acumen, cleverness, and humor. But as death is the end of all suffering then why would I not want to be dead at some point I certainly agree here. And also wha...

Desolation Row . ;-) Indeed I do love Bob Dylan :) This thread could go in various directions. I know that not everyone has a spare hour to devote to listening to a talk, yet I am curious if you-all were able to listen to Bowden's talk on Savitri Devi? He raised so many interesting points and point...

and it also complicates the notion of assigning 'moral stupidity' to the Nazis. Thanks for the interesting response Gustav. I'm not especially equipped to make claims about social phenomena such as collective Nazi ideology, the Roman Empire, the conquest of the west, and so on. It's an very good po...

Re: Was Satan wrong to demand equal rights in heaven?
Where is that in Scripture? Revelation 12:8–9 But he was not strong enough, and they lost their place in heaven. 9 The great dragon was hurled down—that ancient serpent called the devil, or Satan, who leads the whole world astray. He was hurled to the earth, and his angels with him. Luke 10:18 He r...

That's the point of departure I think. It's a choice. You must choose whether to believe that Satan's motives were properly reactionary to a tyrannical God, or to believe in God's fundamental goodness and worthiness of loyalty; the latter is faith.
