Capitalism stands for voluntary transactions, i.e., freedom, whereas socialism stands for forcing people to live their lives the way some politician thinks they should. The reason why "intellectuals" grasp onto socialism is because the "intellectuals" you are speaking of would be out of jobs if they had to admit leaving peple alone to live their lives as they see fit, provided they don't harm anyone else, would leave them without any intellectual BS to ponder. Socialist engineering, i.e., slavery and manipulation of people, on the other hand, gives those same "intellectuals" something to ponder on about.

There appear to be as many, if not more, intellectuals advocating Capitalism than Socialism. Does this now mean that Capitalism is better?

In practice probably not, but whilst acknowledging this it is quite possible to favour the arguments of one school over the other.

Arising UK, I don't have any direct evidence that socialism has more intellectuals on its side (I did say it was my impression), but there is some evidence that the most intelligent people are less likely to vote Conservative.

People are free to barter under Capitalism. It happens all the time.
