Capitalism works better in practice. Compare the GNP of North Korea to that of South Korea.

Free-market capitalism is the only form of capitalism, everything else being fraudulent.

A stupid thread and a meaningless poll.

There is no capitalist system without some elements of socialism, and vice-versa.

Spoken like a true idiot.

Capitalism stands for voluntary transactions, i.e., freedom, whereas socialism stands for forcing people to live their lives the way some politician thinks they should. The reason why "intellectuals" grasp onto socialism is because the "intellectuals" you are speaking of would be out of jobs if they had to admit leaving peple alone to live their lives as they see fit, provided they don't harm anyone else, would leave them without any intellectual BS to ponder. Socialist engineering, i.e., slavery and manipulation of people, on the other hand, gives those same "intellectuals" something to ponder on about.

Any evidence for this?

There appear to be as many, if not more, intellectuals advocating Capitalism than Socialism. Does this now mean that Capitalism is better?

The barter system stands for voluntary transactions. Does this mean that we should adopt it in the name of freedom?

In practice probably not, but whilst acknowledging this it is quite possible to favour the arguments of one school over the other.

Arising UK, I don't have any direct evidence that socialism has more intellectuals on its side (I did say it was my impression), but there is some evidence that the most intelligent people are less likely to vote Conservative.

The propriety of capitalism versus socialism is not something settled by a vote, it is only settled by the pure logic espoused by Bob the Baptist, O my brothers in tribulation!

Notes from The Guardian article dated 4th July 2012, http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2012/ju ... NETTXT9038
Guardian.co.uk wrote:In 2008, Reuters reports, a survey of east Germans found 52% believed the free-market economy was "unsuitable" and 43% said they wanted socialism back.
The intellectual breakdown of the respondents is not provided.

The irony of global capitalism being that:
Guardian.co.uk wrote:The proletariat, far from burying capitalism, are keeping it on life support.
Jacques Rancière, the French marxist thinker and Professor of Philosophy at the University of Paris VIII. wrote:The domination of capitalism globally depends today on the existence of a Chinese Communist party that gives de-localised capitalist enterprises cheap labour to lower prices and deprive workers of the rights of self-organisation

People are free to barter under Capitalism. It happens all the time.
